HOOSIERS DEFEAT SPARTANS IN FIRST GAME OF TOURNAMENT

Simone's three goals lead Hoosiers past Michigan State
Bloomington, Ind.--The Indiana Women's Water Polo team defeated the Michigan State Spartans 5-3 in the opening match of the 1999 Holiday Inn/Tortilla Flat Indiana Invitational. With the victory, the Hoosiers improved their record to 11 12 on the season.
IU was led by sophomore Deb Simone. Simone scored two goals in the second quarter and added a third, and game winning, goal in the third period. Sophomore Molly Fonner opened the scoring for Indiana. Fonner netted the Hoosiers first goal with 1:32 left in the first period. Freshman Mary Lesniak capped IU's scoring in the fourth. Lesniak scored with 2:52 left in the game to give IU the 5-3 lead.
In other action, the Michigan Wolverine easily defeated the Wisconsin Badgers 12 3. The Wolverines used goals from nine different swimmers to take advantage of the Badgers.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with two games in the morning and two
in the evening. The schedule is as follows:
