WOMEN'S GOLF TEAM SET TO DEFEND BIG TEN TITLE

Tournament Data: The Indiana University women's golf team will compete in the Big Ten Women's Golf Championships, April 30 - May 2 at the 5,973 yard, par-72 Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Indiana. The format of the tournament will be 36 holes played on Thursday, and 18 holes to be played on Friday and Saturday. Indiana is the defending Big Ten Champion, winning last year's tournament by 13 strokes over Ohio State. The Hoosiers also set an all-time tournament record last year, when they fired a 72-hole score of 1,196.
Teams: Illinois, #19 Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, #36 Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, #16 Ohio State, #43 Penn State, #29 Purdue, Wisconsin.
The Hoosiers: IU is coming off two consecutive wins, the Indiana Invitational and the Hawkeye Invitational. Senior Erin Carney (75) also tied for first at last year's Big Ten Championships, and is coming off another impressive season, leading the way at both the IU Invite and the Hawkeye, finishing fifth at the Indiana Invite and grabbing medalist honors in Iowa. Carney is currently ranked #25 by GolfWeek.
Joining Carney in West Lafayette will be seniors Michelle Hatfield (79.9) and Jennifer Seger (80), juniors Theresa McDermott (79) and Sami Montgomery (79.6) and freshman Tiffany Fisher (78.2).
Coach Sam Carmichael believes this weekend will be a battle between four teams, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and IU. But, he is confident his team is ready to defend its title and thinks his golfers are ready to play.
"We're playing much better than we did earlier in the season. Hopefully we can keep up the good play," he said. I feel we have a good nucleus of six solid players and that should give us the chance to win again."
