NCAA Rules in Favor of Indiana's Appeal
Bloomington, Ind. -- The NCAA ruled today that the Indiana University football program will not be penalized for visiting a recruit following the death of his father this past January.
Kris Dielman, a Troy, Ohio, native who signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Indiana University this past February, called head football coach Cam Cameron following his father's unexpected death and Cameron visited Dielman in Ohio immediately upon hearing the news. The contact was the second of the week between Cameron and Dielman which, according to the NCAA, constituted a penalty. Also, assistant coach Jeff Hammerschmidt attended Michael Dielman's funeral which placed one more coach on the road than was allowed during that particular recruiting period. The NCAA originally ruled that the actions of the IU staff constituted rules violations and levied several penalties, including ruling Dielman ineligible to compete in athletics at Indiana University.
"We are very pleased with the NCAA's decision to drop all of the
penalties," said Cameron. "I am especially happy for Kris. (Athletic
Director) Clarence Doninger and (Associate AD/Women's Administration and
Compliance) Mary Ann Rohleder were instrumental in the appeal process. Time
was of the essence and both should be credited for acting so expeditiously
in their response to the original ruling."
