Carney's strong play leads Hoosiers
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. - The Indiana University women's golf team fired a first day total of 630 (314-316) over the 5,973 yard, par-72 Kampen Golf Course, to grab second place at the 1999 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship. Ohio State is the team leader, turning in scores of 310 and 313 for a total of 623.
IU was led by senior Erin Carney, who carded successive rounds of 75. Carney's total of six over-par 150, is good enough for second place, just one stroke behind leader Amber Amstutz, 74-75 (149) of Ohio State.
Other Hoosiers performing well on the first day include Theresa McDermott, who carded rounds of 78 and 80 (158), leaving her tied for ninth place, and freshman Tiffany Fisher, who shot 159 (80-79) and grabbed a part of 11th place.
The tournament will continue tomorrow and conclude on Sunday, with 18 holes to be played each day.
