HOOSIERS SWEEP WILDCATS
Evanston, Ill. -- The Indiana baseball team swept a double header from
Northwestern Saturday 12-11 and 5-4, to stay just one game out of the Big
Ten Tournament playoff picture.
In the first game the Hoosiers jumped out to a 9-3 lead after 3 1/2 innings
on the strength of Doug DeVore's bat. The junior hit a three-run and two-run
home run and then had an rbi single for six RBIs in his first three at bats.
The Wildcats came back to take a 11-9 lead as the Hoosiers batted in the
top of the seventh.
After Frank O'Connell led off the inning with a single, Brandt Childs
drilled a two-run home run to tie the game.
Jason Williams then followed with a single and advanced to third with two
outs. Tim McNab, who had entered the game an inning earlier in left field,
then ripped a single to center for the winning run.
Chris Wilson then came on to register the save.
Childs homered again in the second inning of game two to give the Hoosiers
a 2-1 lead. However Northwestern came back and took a 4-3 lead as the Hoosiersbatted
in the top of the seventh.
Childs then led off the inning with a single and was replaced by a pich-runner,
Benji Clause. Clause then adanced to second on a passed ball and moved to
third on a fly out.
With pinch-hitter Robert Stastny at the plate, Clause scored on a wild pitch
to tie the game. Then, just two pitches later, Stastny drilled a Phil Rosengren
pitch over the left field wall for the winning run.
Wilson then came on for the third consecutive game to earn the save.
The Hoosiers are now 32-12 overall and 10-9 in the Big Ten. Northwestern
is now 19-23 overall and 7-12 in the league. The Wildcats last seven losses
have all benn by one run.
Nick Otte won the first game for the Hoosiers and is now 7-1 on the seasonwhiel
Zack McClellan won the nightcap and is now 6-0 this season/
The team's will conlude the series SUnday afternoon witha single game.
