NCAA WOMEN'S GOLF REGIONAL SUSPENDED DUE TO DARKNESS
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The opening round of the 1999 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional weathered through two separate severe weather delays totaling two and one-half hours with play being suspended due to darkness late Thursday. Six of the 19 teams will complete the first round Friday morning with second round action starting at 8:40 a.m.
Host South Carolina, Wake Forest, Auburn, Indiana, Campbell and North Carolina did not finish play Thursday and will complete their rounds Friday before starting the second 18 holes. The Lady Gamecocks, Lady Camels and Lady Tar Heels had two players each complete their rounds while the remaining three teams have all of their players on the course.
With 13 of the 19 teams off the course, Furman leads the field with a season-low, two-over 290 team score. The Lady Paladins were led by Jennifer Perri, who fired a one-under 71, while No. 5 player Dara Broadus posted a one-over 73, almost 10 strokes under her season stroke average. Top-ranked Duke currently stands in second place at 292, while
Florida State is third among completed teams with a 296 score. The top individual round of the day came from Penn State's Laura Hammond, who posted a three-under 69 score to lead the finishers by two strokes.
After play Saturday, the top eight teams and two individuals from non-qualifying teams and individual participants will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-22, at the Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club. In the West Regional being played in Houston, Tex., Stanford has a seven stroke lead over Arizona State and Southern California. The top 11 teams from that regional with two individuals will advance to the NCAAs as well.
