HOOSIERS DROP PAIR AT NATIONALSDavis, Calif. -- The Indiana Women's Water Polo team dropped a pair of matches in the 1999 Women's Collegiate Water Polo Championships at Solano College Pool.
Indiana (21-16) fell to top seeded USC 17-2 to open tournament play and then dropped a 7-2 decision to ninth-seeded San Jose State.
In the first game, the Trojans (27-2) ripped off 10 consecutive goals before Kristin Carpenter's long shot from the point with three seconds remaining stopped the run.
Trailing 11-1, freshman Mary Lesniak scored with 3:40 to go in the third for Indiana's second goal of the match.
Jennifer Durley and Lisa Saenz each scored three times for the top-ranked Trojans.
In the second match, Inna Fedoseyeva struck for the Spartans 25 seconds into the match. Elizabeth Garcia put SJSU (17-21) up 2-0 with a goal of her own but Carpenter cut the lead to one with six seconds left in the first.
The Spartans responded with three straight in the second as Garcia added two more to her game-high total of three. Sophomore Sheri Fagley got on the board with 2:09 left in the period as Indiana trailed 5-2.
SJSU added one more before the half and another in the fourth to take the 7-2 win. Kara Fellerhoff swiped three balls while Kelly McKay had an assist and two steals.
Carpenter's two goals put her at 51 for the season, breaking the single-season mark of 50 set last year by Deb Simone.
The Hoosiers will play tomorrow at 9:45 a.m.(PDT) against the loser of Maryland and UC San Diego in consolation bracket play. Tomorrow's action will move to Hickey Pool at UC-Davis.
