HOOSIERS PLACE 16TH AT NATIONALS
Davis, Calif. -- The Indiana Women's Water Polo team lost both its games today to finish 16th at the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships at UC Davis' Hickey Pool.
Indiana (21-18) lost 12-8 to Maryland (23-10) and 5-3 to arch-rival Michigan (34-11).
In the Maryland match, Indiana took the lead 55 seconds into the match on the first of Molly Fonner's three goals. Fonner also added four steals and an assist.
The Terps answered with two of their own but Indiana tied it at two on on Sheri Fagley's bullet from the right point with 5:27 left in the second.
Maryland retook the lead on the second of Katie Vitali's four goals but Indiana responded with two right before the half to take a 4-3 lead. The goals came from a Fonner shot from the right wing and a close-in shot by Kelly McKay.
Indiana's lead was shortlived as the Terps struck for two to open the third. Christine McCall's goal two minutes in gave Maryland a 5-4 lead.
Indiana stormed back when goalie Kirsten Mayberry found Kelly McKay streaking down the middle toward the Terrapin goal. Jaclyn Corr hauled McKay down, setting up a Deb Simone's penalty shot that tied the match at five. Simone ended up with three goals for Indiana.
Less than a minute later Fonner blasted one in from the left side to put Indiana up 6-5. After the teams swapped goals, Jill Deckarlsey put the Terps ahead to stay on a steal and score with under a minute to play in the period.
Against Michigan, the Hoosiers fell behind 4-1 at the half and were unable to convert countless second-half scoring opportunities. Sheri Fagley, Kristin Carpenter and Simone each had a goal for Indiana. Fonner and Simone both added three steals for Indiana.
Coach Barry King said, "We created some opportunities but were unable
to execute and finish them. We had a lot of chances but we did not cash
them in."
