Bloomington, Indiana-- The Indiana women's soccer team opens the 1999 campaign at Xavier Saturday at 7 p.m. (EDT).
Coach Joe Kelley leads the Hoosiers into the program's seventh season ranked No. 28 by soccerbuzz.com, a web site devoted totally to women's soccer. Eight starters return from the 1998 squad that went 14-8-1 and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Seniors Tracy Grose and Ashley Davis are two key returnees. Grose, a forward, was named first-team All-Big Ten and All-America honorable mention after scoring an IU record 15 goals last season. Davis set IU goalkeeping records for wins (14) and shutouts (8) and was named second-team All-Big Ten in 1998.
The Hoosiers also add a talented freshman class featuring NSCAA High School All-American back Lisa Tecklenburg. The newcomers are ranked No. 20 nationally and No. 3 regionally by soccerbuzz.com.
The Hoosiers are 6-0 all-time in season openers, including 1-0 and 4-1 wins over Xavier in 1994 and 1998, respectively.
NOTE: IU's home opener is September 12 against Saint Louis at 6 p.m.
