DURHAM, N.C. - Indiana's volleyball team improved to 5-0 after defeating Connecticut (3-2) 15-12, 15-12, 11-15, 15-11 in the first round of the Duke Classic Friday evening at the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Big Ten Player of the Week Amanda Welter led the Hoosiers attack, recording 27 kills. She was followed by All-Big Ten performer Ryann Connors who registered 23 kills. As a team, Indiana registered 95 kills to UConn's 79. Indiana also posted a .282 attack percentage.
"I am very pleased that we beat Connecticut," said Katie Weismiller. "UConn is a very solid team. I felt that we could have won in three games but defensively, our fundementals broke down. Individually, Amanda played well for us and it was also good to have Erin Heimann in their playing even though she hurt her ankle in practice last night."
The Hoosiers return to action tomorrow (Saturday) playing either tournament
host Duke or Mercer in the Championship game at 4 p.m. (Eastern).
