INDIANA SWEEPS TO DUKE TO WIN DUKE CLASSIC
DURHAM, N.C. - Indiana's volleyball team picked up its sixth-straight victory Saturday evening, defeating Duke in the championship match of the Duke Classic 15-10, 15-11, 15-5. With the victory, the Hoosiers remain undefeated on the season at 6-2 while Duke falls to 3-2.
For the second-straight weekend, Big Ten Player of the Week Amanda Welter earned MVP all-tournament honors. Last weekend she was named MVP of the Florida State Invitational. Joining her on the all-tourney team were setter Kristina Sanderson and outside hitter Ryann Connors.
Welter led the Hoosiers' attack, registering 15 kills, no errors on 23 attempts for an impressive .652 attack percentage. Connors also posted 15 kills while Jill Mudge added 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage.
As a team, Indiana hit a .458 with only seven errors on 131 attempts in the match, which included a perfect 19 kills and no errors in game three.
"We played very well tonight," said Weismiller. "I thought that our starters came in and did a nice job. Defensively, we picked it up a notch from last night's match. Individually, I thought that Kristen Daly came in in the third game and played impressively for a freshman with nine kills and no errors."
The Hoosiers return to action Tuesday, Sept. 14, hosting the United States
Professional Volleyball League at 7 p.m., in University Gym.
