INDIANA WINS HOOSIERTIMES.COM INVITE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team picked up two victories Saturday to win the HoosierTimes.com Invitational at University Gym. The Hoosiers defeated Cleveland State 15-17, 15-9, 15-8, 15-10 and Boston College 15-7, 15-7, 15-6 to win the the championship and close out their nonconference portion of the season with a perfect 9-0 record.
Senior outside hitter Ryann Connors earned tournament MVP honors after collecting 46 kills and 24 digs for the weekend. She was joined on the all-tourney team by Amanda Welter and Cydryce Carter.
Saturday morning's defeat of Cleveland State gave IU Coach Katie Weismiller her 100th school victory, improving her Indiana record after the night match to 101-99.
"I was totally shocked and suprised," said Weismiller of the 100 wins. "I had no clue that I was at 100 wins but I truly believe we can improve on that."
Of her team's weekend performance she said, "It wasn't a pretty weekend but we came out of it 3-0. We struggled but when it came down to wins and loses, we came out on top."
Against Cleveland State, Connors led IU's attack with 19 kills and nine digs. Welter added 14 kills, 11 digs and four blocks.
In the night cap, against Boston College, Welter led all Hoosiers with 13 kills and three blocks.
The Hoosiers will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 22, traveling to
Illinois for its Big Ten opener against the Fighting Illini in Huff Hall
at 7 p.m., in Champaign.
