b>Louisville, Ky.-- The Indiana Hoosiers have never lost to the Louisville Cardinals in head coach Jerry Yeagley's 27 year coaching career. Tonight would be no different. The Hoosiers now hold an impressive 7-0 record over the Cardinals overall and a 3-0 record at Cardinal Field.
The Cardinal fans were ready to face the defending national champions as a sold-out crowd of 1,182 fans gathered around the outskirts of Cardinal Field.
"Louisville came out fired up," Yeagley said. "They gained a lot of confidence after beating South Florida on their home field last weekend."
The game unfolded as a defensive matchup. The Cardinal defense swarmed senior forward Aleksey Korol throughout the entire game holding him to just two shots.
Near the end of the first period at 40:36, IU got their first good quality scoring chance. Korol was on the attack and dished the ball over to junior forward Matt Fundenberger. Fundenberger fired the ball from five yards directly past the goalkeeper to record IU's first goal in the first period since the Brown game two weeks ago. Also, it was Korol's first assist of the 1999 season.
The Hoosiers went into the lockerroom with a 1-0 lead and a 8-4 advantage on shots.
As the second period began, the Hoosiers began to wear out the Cardinals. IU attacked the ball with aggressiveness commiting 21 fouls to Louisville's 12.
With 19 minutes into the second period, IU had two back-to-back chances. First Korol drove the ball to the box headed the ball dirctly at one of the Cardinal players who headed the ball out of bounds The next play resulted in a corner kick. Sophomore Ryan Mack served the corner to freshman Pat Noonan who flipped the ball directly into the net.
"Ryan Mack serves a dangerous ball in the air on his corners," Yeagley said. "It makes it very hard to defend."
Yeagley was pleased that the team connected on their chances although Korol did not score. "It was nice to see some of the other guys score when Aleksey could not," Yeagley said. Pat Noonan scored his first career goal and Aleksey connected on his first assist."
The Hoosiers return to Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday to face Michigan State. IU also owns a perfect 24-0 record against the Spartans. Action begins at 2:30 p.m.
