HOOSIERS PICK UP FIRST CONFERENCE WIN
EVANSTON, Ill. - Indiana's volleyball team picked up its first Big Ten Conference win of the season Saturday, defeating Northwestern 8-15, 15-5, 15-5, 15-7 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 10-1 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play while the Wildcats fall to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Freshman outside hitter Hilary Toivonen, making her first Big Ten start, led the Hoosiers defensively with 18 digs while also recording 16 kills and an impressive .407 attack percentage. Junior Amanda Welter led the team offensivley with 18 kills.
Redshirt freshman Laurie Gardner set the entire match for Indiana, collecting 54 assists, 10 digs and three service aces. Teammates Ryann Connors added 11 kills while Laura Mettes posted nine.
As a team, the Hoosiers outplayed the Wildcats offensively, tallying 75 kills to Northwestern's 45. IU also recorded a .321 attack percentage.
"We started off slow in game one but we stuck with it and kept playing and really picked it up our performance in game two," said Katie Weismiller. "We played with a lot of poise on the road and that was pleasing to see. Individually, Hilary did a nice job in her first Big Ten start."
The Hoosiers will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 1, traveling to
Columbus, Ohio for a 7 p.m., match against the Buckeyes.
