Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagleyis in his 27th year at Indiana and is the winningest coach in collegiate soccer history. He has a career record of 463-82-37. He has led the Hoosiers to national titles in 1982, 1983, 1988, and 1998, 12 Final Four appearances and seven Big Ten titles.
Hoosiers In the Polls: After the Hoosier's win against Michigan State, Indiana moved to second on Soccer America's poll and sixth on the NCSAA poll. Indiana remains the top team in the Great Lakes Region.
Series Matchups: The Hoosiers hold an impressive record over the Nittany Lions. Overall, IU is 14-4-2 against Penn State and they hold a 8-1-0 mark at home. In those 20 matches, IU has outscored the Lions 46-25. Last season, IU had their hands full with Penn State. IU escaped with two 1-0 victories in ovetime over the Nittany Lions.
A Look at the Nittany Lions: Penn State is 8-0-0 and holds the no. 1 ranking in all three polls. Last weekend, they were tested in overtime by Bowling Green and Florida International. At the Florida International Invitational, Penn State downed Bowling Green 1-0 in double overtime and then defeated FIU 1-0 in single ovetime. Penn State has two of the top three scorers in the Big Ten in Ricardo Villar and Greg Oldfield. Ricardo Villar is the top scorer for Penn State with seven goals and five assists good for19 points, which leads the Big Ten. Greg Oldfield ranks third in the Big Ten with five goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Whit Gibson has played all eight games and owns a 0.75 goals-against-average.
Last Week Recap: The Hoosiers ride a five-game winning streak after defeating Louisville 2-0 and Michigan State 2-0. At Louisville, Matt Fundenbeger and Pat Noonan were the goal scorers. The game unfolded as a defensive matchup. The Cardinal defense swarmed senior forward Aleksey Korol throughout the entire game holding him to just two shots, but he recorded his first assist of the 1999 season.
Against Michigan State, IU only tallied six shots but found a way to win. Yuri Lavrinenko scored his first goal of the season at the 48:09 mark off a Matt Fundenberger assist. Fundenberger scored only eight minutes later off a pass from Aleksey Korol to secure the 2-0 victory.
Tough Defense: Indiana has allowed only four goals in eight games this season and the team GAA stands at a stellar 0.63. In fact, the Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in goals-against-average and rank seventh in the country with a 0.63. IU also ranks seventh in country in shutout percentage (.625) with five shutouts in eight games.
Hoosier News and Notes: Aleksey Korol remains 9th place on the all-time goals list. He needs just two more to tie for 8th place with Brian Maisonneuve. His 111 career points are now 9th on the all-time scoring list. Korol ranks second in goals with five and third with 12 points in the Big Ten statisticsMatt Fundenberger ranks fourth with four goals and nine points in the Big Ten...Goalkeepers Doug Warren and T.J. Hannig rank first and second in the Big Ten. Warren leads the conference with a 0.47 goals-against-average. That average is also 9th in the nation. Hannig ranks second in the Big Ten with a 0.50 GAA. He also ranks first in the Big Ten with three shutouts...Ryan Mack is second in the Big Ten with four assists while junior Nick Garcia and Korol are tied for fifth with two assists...The Hoosiers have out scored their opponents 7-0 in the first half this seasonIndiana leads in team goals-against-average with a mark of 0.63.
Hoosiers Named All-American: Soccer America released preseason All-American teams and three Indiana players have made the first team. Nick Garcia, Aleksey Korol and Yuri Lavrinenko made the 11-player list.
Korol Becomes 13th Player to Score 100 Points: Senior forward Aleksey Korol scored his 100th point against Maryland to become just the 13th Hoosier in history to record 100 career points. He is now in the company of IU greats like Ken Snow and Armando Betancourt and recent greats like Dema Kovalenko and Lazo Alavanja.
Next Up: Following this weekend's action, the Hoosiers play Butler on Oct. 7 and Evansville on Oct. 10 at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
