HOOSIERS WIN FLORIDA STATE CLASSIC
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Indiana volleyball team posted impressive wins over both South Carolina and Florida State Saturday to win the Tallahassee Democrat/Florida State Classic. The Hoosiers defeated the Gamecocks 15-11, 15-9, 13-15, 15-9 in their morning match before coming back in the evening to sweep the Seminoles 15-6, 16-14, 15-4 for the tournament championship. With the victory the Hoosiers return to Bloomington with a perfect 3-0 season start after defeating Florida International 3-0 Friday.
Three Hoosiers earned a place on the all-tournament team, led by junior outside hitter Amanda Welter who took home tourney MVP honors. Joining her was setter Kristina Sanderson and middle blocker Cydryce Carter.
Against South Carolina, three Hoosiers tallied double-figure kills and were led by Welter who finished with 18. Sophomore Jill Mudge followed with 17 kills while Cydryce Carter added 11 kills, 18 digs and seven blocks. As a team, the Hoosiers posted a .240 attack percentage to the Gamecocks' .119.
In the evening finale against FSU, Welter again led the Hoosier attack with nine kills while teammate Mudge added eight.
Head Coach Katie Weismiller was impressed with the determination her team displayed in today's matches. "I really feel as if the team stepped it up a notch against South Carolina," said Weismiller. "They (USC) were a very good team. We saw a lot of leadership out of Amanda, Kristina and Cydryce this weekend and it was also nice to see Jill Mudge back out their taking swings after missing last season with a knee injury."
Indiana will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 7, hosting its season home
opener against Indiana State at 7 p.m., in University Gym.
