The following quotes were selected from Cam Cameron's Tuesday press conference prior to this weekend's game vs. North Carolina.
On North Carolina: "North Carolina is a very similar team to the one we played there two years ago. They play the same type of defense...pressure defensively. Offensively, it is basically the same, with a few wrinkles and obviously a very talented quarterback who, in my mind, gets better every snap he plays. It's just going to be a matter of time before he is one of, if not the best, quarterback in the country. He, just like all other young quarterbacks, it is going to take time and the more they play the better they get. Today, Wednesday, and Thursday are critical, critical, days for us."
On quarterbacks Antwaan Randle El and Ronald Curry: "I'm not around Curry and don't know him. Obviously, I knew about him in high school but I've never sat down with him. There are some things, athletic ability-wise, other than the size difference, that make them carbon copies of one another. They both have great feet, great awareness, and great arm strength. I don't know how he is in terms of meetings and preparation and those usually become the critical elements of any quarterback being successful. What you see on film is very, very similar. I think Curry is just a little bit bigger, in fact quite a bit bigger I think."
On Randle El's performance on Saturday and if he tried to force the action: "Really, he graded out at almost 95 percent in the game and if he hadn't had the one turnover he would have graded out 100 percent. A lot of times the way you play is dictated on how you are defended. We had one time when the left guard stepped on his foot. We had another play where De'Wayne Hogan tripped him up. They were playing the ends soft so he had to carry the ball more than even he would have liked to. Early in the game we kicked one out and went for 20-some yards so I'm sure they tried to get their ends to skate a little bit more. He completed just about every ball he threw. The ones that he missed, one was dropped and one was just out of reach which would have been a touchdown. He really graded out pretty good."
On defensive end Adewale Ogunleye's ankle injury sustained vs. Ball State: "He'll be fine."
On quarterback Tommy Jones' injury to his index finger on his throwing hand: "He'll dress today at practice. He'll probably move to third (on the depth chart) until it heals completely. Gibran (Hamdan) will be our backup and Tommy will be our emergency quarterback. These medical guys, I had a few anatomy and physiology classes, that was a long time ago, but they get to explaining it and the bottom line is that there is a ligament in there that needs to heal or that finger could have some long-term damage and these next few weeks are critical that they straighten it out so he can't move it. There's a slight chip in there but I don't think that's anything significant. It's the ligament that is the concern. He could play and he can throw a football but long term, when you start dealing with ligaments and how they heal, you can do some irreversable damage. He could play, and he could play with the pain, but he could be walking around with a crooked finger for his whole life. Gibran will be our number two quarterback."
On North Carolina's defense: "Carl (Torbush) has done a great job with that scheme the entire time when he was an assistant and now he has continued that now that he is the head coach. They give you a lot of different looks, a lot of different disguises, blitzes, zone blitzes, man, zone, they never really just come up and play you in one defense. Offensively, we are going to have to be sharp, we are going to have great awareness of what defense they are playing, and at times we are going to have to block things on the run because they do an excellent job of executing the schemes. They are a little bit younger on defense than they were the last time we played them but I know that they feel, just as we do, that the young guys are going to get better, and better, and better. Offensively, they are sitting there with several seniors, all of their offensive linemen are seniors, so they are more experienced on offense than the last time we played them."
