Brown Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week
Jennifer Brown was named Big Ten Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week after her performance in the season-opening Early Bird Invitational. The St. Joseph, Ill. native registered a school-record toss of 18.35m (60' 2.5") to win the 20 lb. weight throw and won the shot put with a mark of 15.30m (50' 2.5"). She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both events.
"Heather had some nice performances. However, it's not
close to what she can do. On her bad days she should be at the
top of the conference. We just need to get her to not have any
bad days. I think if you ask her she'd say that she should be
able to compete at a national level, and she can," Women's
Track & Field Head Coach Randy Heisler said of Brown's performance.
Brown Sets School Record; Provisonally Qualifies in Two Events as Hoosiers Open 2000 Season
Bloomington, Ind.-The Indiana women won 10 of 15 events as the Hoosiers opened the 2000 indoor track & field season in the Early Bird Invitational at the Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Jennifer Brown highlighted the list of winners for the Hoosiers as she provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in two different events. The St. Joseph, Ill. native registered a school-record toss of 18.35m (60' 2.5") to win the 20 lb. weight throw and won the shot put with a mark of 15.30m (50' 2.5").
Brown led the way as the meet's lone double winner as a total of 13 different Hoosiers, and two relay teams won events for Indiana.
"Heather had some nice performances. However, it's not close to what she can do. On her bad days she should be at the top of the conference. We just need to get her to not have any bad days. I think if you ask her she'd say that she should be able to compete at a national level, and she can," Women's Track & Field Head Coach Randy Heisler said.
Tia Trent (600 meters 1:35.15), LaToya Turner (60 meter hurdles 8.64), Danielle Carruthers (60 meters 7.55), Suzanne Botkin (800 meters 2:27.20) and Lorraine Dunlop (200 meters 24.94) won events on the track for the women while Tandra Foster (Long jump 5.59m-18' 4.25") and Rose Richmond (triple jump 11.45m-37' 6.75") captured a two more field events to add to Brown's pair of victories. Foster's jump topped the Hoosier's best mark of a season ago (5.41m-Maria Fleischmann) by .18 meters.
"It was a good start for our season. We've been gone for three weeks and have only had two practices. I was really pleased with our freshmen's effort. To have them get experience in a college situation was really beneficial. I can see that we definitely have kids that can give us some good depth," Heisler said.
The Hoosiers will entertain the Wolverines on Saturday, 15
at noon.
