HOOSIERS DEFEAT MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE
Murfreesboro, TN--After dropping a slugfest on Saturday, Indiana came back to beat Middle Tennessee State on Sunday, 17-6 to even the weekend series.
IU got the sticks going early, as the Hoosiers batted around,
tallying eight hits and nine runs in the first. Eric Blakeley
and Dan Haegele singled twice in the first. Jason Williams doubled,
and Rich Berich, Blake St. Clair and Gibran Hamdan each singled
once in the first.
Indiana struck again in the fourth. St. Clair got things started with a double that scored Berich off a MT error. Williams, Tim McNab, Hamdan and Clause all had hits in the fourth as IU scored four. In the fifth, Kevin O'Brien's double scored Williams and St. Clair to put IU up 15-3. In the sixth inning Clause scored off a Berich double. In the eighth, Vasilli Spanos collected his first collegiate RBI, by sending Vince Volpe home.
The Hoosiers finished with 20 hits and four errors for the day. Every starting Hoosier had at least one hit.
Brad Edwards led Indiana on the mound. The sophomore southpaw
started the day by sitting down the first
three Blue Raiders (one strikeout). For the day, Edwards worked
five innings, struck out six, walked two, and gave up five runs.
Senior Tom Willerer relieved Edwards in the sixth, and threw
two innings, giving up no runs, striking out two. Matt Rice came
in for the eighth inning, allowing no hits Chris Wilson finished
out the game for the Hoosiers. The senior closer gave up no runs,
or hits.
The win pushes the Hoosiers to 4-3 on the season, and 1-3
on the road. IU hosts IU Southeast on Monday at 3 p.m.
