INDIANA ADDS VIRGINIA STANDOUT TO RECRUITING CLASS
Bloomington, Ind. -- Head football coach Cam Cameron today announced that Marques Hagans, a three-sport standout from Hampton, Va., has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Indiana University. He is expected to play quarterback for the Hoosiers but also returns punts and is a talented defensive back. He may also play basketball.
"We couldn't be happier that Marques has made the decision to attend Indiana," said Cameron. "He is a truly exceptional athlete and his best football is still ahead of him. He just turned 17-years-old (12/29/82) and can really throw the football. He is a passer who has the ability to get out and run if things break down, rather than a runner who can throw. (Linebackers coach) Ron Burton did an excellent job building a relationship with him."
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, Hagans played for one of the top high school football programs in the country at Hampton High School, where he played for Mike Smith, the only coach in the history of the state to win over 300 career games. This past year, he helped lead the Crabbers to a 12-1 record and an appearance in the state semifinals while earning the Peninsula District's Offensive Player-of-the-Year. He completed 84-of-186 passes for 1,934 yards and 25 touchdowns (3 INTs) and rushed for 677 yards and 16 scores. Hampton outscored its opponents 568-43.
As a junior, Hagans helped lead Hampton to a 13-1 record and a Group AAA Division V state championship as he completed 65-of-153 passes for 1,757 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also carried 150 times for 713 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He is currently participating on the Hampton baseball team and helped lead his high school basketball team to a 23-4 record, including an appearance in the regionals.
Hagans received strong interest from Georgia, Nebraska and
Virginia.
Hampton High School produced current University of North Carolina
quarterback/point guard Ronald Curry, the national high school
player-of-the-year in both sports in 1997-98.
