INDIANA ANNOUNCES ADDITIONS TO FOOTBALL STAFF Hunter named as offensive coordinator; Flynn to coach outside linebackers
Bloomington, Ind.
-- Head football coach Cam Cameron today announced the addition
of two assistant coaches to the Indiana University football staff.
Hal Hunter, who was the assistant head coach and offensive line
coach at Louisiana State University from 1995-99, has been named
offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Assistant head
coach Pete Schmidt will retain offensive play-calling duties.
Also, former Central Michigan
University head coach Dick Flynn will coach outside linebackers.
Hunter moves into the position vacated by Mark Deal who will
now serve as a football administrative assistant. Flynn replaces
Jeff Hammerschmidt who has
been named as the defensive coordinator at St. Mary's College
in Moraga, Calif.
"We couldn't
be more pleased that we have been able to add such quality men
and experienced coaches to our staff," said Cameron. "Hal
(Hunter) was an assistant head coach and helped construct one
of the finest
offensive lines in the SEC during his time at LSU and we will
look for him to continue to help improve our offensive production.
In Dick (Flynn), we have a former head coach at the Division
I level and I think that speaks for itself. Add to that over
15 years of experience as a defensive coordinator and linebackers
coach and we have made another great addition to our staff.
"The opportunity
for Mark (Deal) to move into an administrative role presented
itself and he is excited about what he'll be able to provide
Indiana University and this football program from this new position.
Jeff
Hammerschmidt could not pass up the opportunity offered to him
and I know that he is really looking forward to returning to
the West Coast."
As the assistant head
coach and offensive line coach at Louisiana State University
from 1995-99, Hunter was instrumental in building one of the
finest offensive lines in the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers
led the SEC in rushing in both 1997 and 1998. In 1997, Hunter
was credited with the development of Outland Trophy finalist
Alan Faneca, a two-time All-America selection and first-round
pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1998 NFL draft. That same
year, LSU's offensive line also featured two-time first-team
All-SEC center Todd McClure, a 1999 draft selection of the Atlanta
Falcons. Just this past season, as LSU's interim head coach,
Hunter helped lead the Tigers to a season-ending 35-10 win over
Arkansas.
Prior to arriving
at LSU, Hunter, 40, served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt
from 1991-94. While at Vandy, he coached tackles and tight ends
for three seasons before being placed in charge of the entire
offensive
line in 1994. The Commodores ranked second in the SEC in
rushing yardage in 1991, 1992, and 1994.
Hunter has also coached
at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1986), Columbia (1985),
Pittsburgh (1983-84), William&Mary (1982), and with Hamilton
of the Canadian Football League in 1981. He began his career
as a defensive line and strength coach at Northwestern in 1979.
He is a 1982 graduate of Northwestern University.
Hunter and his wife,
Tracy, have two children, Hal IV and Andrew.
Dick Flynn, 57, brings
over 20 years of coaching experience to Indiana, including the
last six seasons as the head coach at Central Michigan University.
After being named as Central Michigan's 22nd head coach on April
25, 1994, Flynn helped lead the Chippewas to the Mid-America
Conference championship with an 8-1 record (9-3 overall). That
same year, CMU made an appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl and Flynn
was recognized as the
MAC's Coach-of-the-Year.
Prior to being named
as head coach, Flynn spent 16 seasons as Central Michigan's defensive
coordinator. During this time, CMU won Mid-American Conference
titles in 1979, 1980, and 1990. The Chippewas led the MAC in
total defense on three occasions under Flynn while pacing the
MAC in rush defense six times and in scoring defense during seven
different seasons. In 1990, Central Michigan led the nation in
scoring defense (8.9 points per game), was second in pass defense, ninth in rush defense,
and fourth in total defense in Division I-A. In his 17 years
as a defensive coordinator, Flynn's defense finished in the top
10 in the country in total defense on eight different occasions.
Before arriving at
Central Michigan, Flynn was the head football coach at Lansing
(Mich.) Eastern High School from 1971-78.
An end at Michigan
State in 1962 and 1963, Flynn started at offensive tackle in
1964 despite his 6-foot-2, 190-pound, frame. Following graduation
in 1965, he served as an assistant football and baseball coach
at
Lansing Eastern High School before spending four years in the
Air Force where he reached the rank of captain.
He and his wife, Mary,
have two adult daughters.
In his new position
as administrative assistant, Deal will assist with fundraising
and on-campus recruiting, along with radio and television ventures
such as the Cam Cameron Show.
Indiana will conduct
its first practice session of the spring on Wednesday.
