INDIANA FOOTBALL OPENS SPRING PRACTICE
Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana University opened spring football
practice today on the grass practice fields adjacent to the Mellencamp
Pavilion. Today's practice marked the debut of three new assistant
coaches --offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Hal Hunter,
defensive coordinator James Bell, and outside linebackers coach
Dick Flynn. Also, junior Heisman Trophy candidate Antwaan Randle
El participated in today's practice. He has decided to concentrate
on football this spring and will no longer be a member of the
baseball team. He has not ruled out returning to the baseball
team in the future.
"We've got holes to fill on the offensive line but we also
have experience returning on both sides of the ball. We've played
with freshman and sophomores for the past few years but we'll
finally have some experienced players returning, said Head Coach
Cam Cameron. It's just good to get the
helmets on. So much time in football is spent in preparation
and these 15 practices will show us how much we've improved the
last two or three months."
Today's practice was marked by several position changes, most notably the move of sophomore Kris Dielman from tight end to tackle and sophomore A.C. Myler from defensive tackle to offensive tackle.
Guard Jamarkus Gorman, who suffered a knee injury during winter conditioning that required surgery, will not participate in drills this spring but has made a very quick recovery and is expected to be 100 percent by the opening of training camp.
Today's practice also featured the debuts of two junior college transfers: center Matt Genasci and wide receiver Henry Frazier. Prep school transfer Patrick Thompson, a quarterback, also participated in today's practice.
The Hoosiers will practice tomorrow, Thursday, at 3:30 p.m. EST.
