2000 Captains Announced
Bloomington, Ind. -- Head football coach Cam Cameron today announced that four football captains have been chosen for the 2000 campaign. As selected by their teammates, the four include two fifth-year seniors, Versie Gaddis (Atlanta/Frederick Douglass) and Paul Mandina (Rochester,
N.Y./Webster), and juniors Antwaan Randle El (Riverdale, Ill./Thornton) and Kemp Rasmussen (Hadley, Mich./Lapeer West).
A 5-foot-10, 188-pound, wide receiver, Gaddis started 11 games last fall and led Indiana in receptions with 35. He tallied 633 receiving yards, including 3 touchdowns. In the 1999 season opener vs. Ball State, he tallied 3 receptions for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a Memorial Stadium-record 81-yard touchdown reception. He has earned a bachelor's degree in general studies with a minor in telecommunications.
Mandina, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound, defensive tackle was one of Indiana's most consistent defenders throughout the 1999 campaign. He finished the season with 40 tackles, including 4 for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also forced and recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.
A leading candidate for the 2000 Heisman Trophy, the 5-foot-10, 194-pound, Randle El is quite possibly the nation's most exciting and versatile player. He was a semifinalist for the 1999 Davey O' Brien Award. As a sophomore in 1999, he completed 150 of 279 passes for 2,277 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also rushed for 788 yards and 13 scores and became the first sophomore in the history of the Big Ten Conference to reach 5,000 career total yards during his sophomore season (5,683 total yards).
The 6-foot-3, 264-pound, Rasmussen started 11 games at defensive end in 1999 and recorded 42 tackles, including 11.5 for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also broke up 3 passes, forced 2 fumbles, and blocked a kick.
Indiana opens its 2000 campaign vs. North Carolina State on September 9 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Tickets are still available and may be purchased by contacting the IU Athletics Ticket Office at (812) 855-4006 or may be purchased on the web at www.athletics.indiana.edu.
