Travel Notes for This Week's Game Against Kentucky
Indiana Department of Transportation officials announced plans last week to avoid gridlock north of the Ohio River when southbound Interstate 65 in Louisville is closed later this month. This interstate closure will affect any IU fans plans on making the trip to Lexington, Kentucky for Saturday's football game between the Hoosiers and the Wildcats.
The interstate will be closed -- from 9 p.m. Sept. 15 to 6 a.m. Sept. 18 between Spaghetti Junction and the Watterson Expressway to allow maintenance on I-65 overpasses.
The detour routes southbound I-65 traffic onto I-265 west to I-64 east. It crosses the Sherman Minton Bridge and follows I-264 back to I-65 near Louisville International Airport.
That may be the easy part. To ease the way for detour traffic, several other changes will be made:
• The State Street entrance ramp to I-265 west in Floyd County will be closed during the detour.
• Eastbound I-64 traffic will be restricted to one lane at the U.S. 150 interchange so that vehicles getting on I-64 from I-265, just to the east, can merge more easily.
• RAMPS TO Southbound I-65 from Ind. 265 west and from Court Avenue in Jeffersonville will be closed.
• Southbound traffic using the 10th Street ramp in Jeffersonville, U.S. 31 and eastbound Indiana 62 will not be allowed to use the Kentucky bridge on I-65. That traffic will be required to use the Clark bridge to cross the river.
o If backups become extreme, all southbound I-65 traffic may be routed onto I-265 west, and eastbound I-265 motorists could be prevented from exiting to southbound I-65. Also, the entrance ramp to southbound I-65 at Eastern Boulevard could be closed in the event of major backups.
A series of signs will be placed among I-65 in advance of the detour --beginning around Seymour.
