Two Gridders Earn Verizon Academic All-District V Honors

Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana senior captain Kemp Rasmussen (Hadley, Mich./Lapeer West) and junior strong safety Joe Gonzalez (Avon Lake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District V Football Team. With selection, both are eligible to be named to the Verizon Academic All-America team.
The 6-foot-3, 251-pound, Rasmussen has started seven games at defensive end and one at defensive tackle in 2001 and is Indiana's third-leading tackler, having recorded 37 tackles, including 6 for loss and 4 sacks. He has also recorded 2 passes broken up, 4 forced fumbles, and has blocked a field goal. For his career, Rasmussen has played in 41 games (29 starts) and has tallied 121 tackles, including 27.5 for loss and 13.5 sacks. His tackle for loss total is the eighth-best mark in school history. Rasmussen has a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and is a Physical Education and Health -- Teacher Prep major. He is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Gonzalez, who has a 3.57 grade point average in Accounting and earned Verizon Academic All-District Honors in 2000, has started seven games at strong safety in 2001 and is second on the team in tackles with 49, including 5 for loss. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors last fall.
The 1,800 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) vote for the Verizon Academic All-America Teams. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00.
Indiana travels to Penn State on Saturday to take on the Nittany Lions. The kickoff is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN Regional.
