Hoosiers Shoot it Out in Alaska
Indiana will compete in the Great Alaska Shootout for the second time in the school's history. The Hoosiers last appeared in the shootout in 1995 beating Alaska-Anchorage before falling to Duke and Connecticut.
Indiana opens the 2001 shootout against Division II Alaska-Anchorage on Wednesday, November 21 at 11:30 p.m. est.
On Television
The Hoosiers will make their television debut with the opening of the Great Alaska Shootout. IU faces Alaska-Anchorage on Wednesday, November 21 at 11:30 p.m. est (ESPN2). The Hoosiers will face either Marquette or Tennessee on Friday at 12:30 a.m.est (Saturday morning) (ESPN) if they win or on Friday at 4:00 p.m. est (no TV) if they lose. The Hoosiers could face the likes of Oregon State, Texas, St. John's or Gonzaga on Saturday. Game times (all est) on Saturday include; 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. and midnight. The lone game to be televised on Saturday will be the championship game on ESPN at midnight.
Indiana owns an all-time mark of 444-170 in televised games including a 5-2 mark on ESPN2 and a 66-25 record on ESPN.

The game can be heard live on the IU Radio Network with the pregame show beginning on hour prior to the tip. The network features nearly 50 different radio stations throughout Indiana. Fans can listen to the game live on-line at iuhoosiers.com.
Against the Field
Indiana owns an all-time mark of 23-10 against the the seven other teams in the Great Alaska Shootout. Here is a look at how IU has fared against the competition.
Alaska-Anchorage-Indiana owns a 1-0 mark with an 84-79 victory coming in 1995.
Marquette-Indiana owns a 7-1 mark and has won the last five meetings. The last time they met came in 1985 when the Hoosiers posted a 94-82 victory.
Tennessee-Indiana owns a 4-0 mark with their last meeting coming in 1985 (IU 74-67).
Gonzaga-Have never met.
Oregon State-Indiana owns a 7-6 mark with their last meeting coming in 1975 (IU 81-71).
St. John's-Indiana owns a 4-2 mark. St. John's won the last meeting in the 1999 NCAA Tournament, 86-61. Indiana's last win came in 1993 (105-80).
Texas-Texas leads the series 1-0 after a 70-58 victory in last year's Preseason NIT.
Third Trip to Alaska
This is Indiana's third trip to the state of Alaska for a preseason tournament. The previous trip came in 1995 as part of the Great Alaska Shootout while the first trip was back in 1978 as the Hoosiers competed in the Seawolf Classic. Indiana owns a 2-4 mark in such tournaments.

A Rare Occurrence
It is rare for Indiana to open its season with back-to-back true road games (playing on the opponent's home court). This season marks the first time since 1918 that a Hoosier team opened the season with back-to-back road games.
In the Polls
Indiana is ranked in both major national polls. The Hoosiers moved up a spot this week in the the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll and now sits 20th. The Hoosiers are ranked 22nd by the Associated Press.

The preseason No. 22 ranking in the Associated Press poll is Indiana's top AP preseason ranking since 1998 when the Hoosiers were ranked 22nd.
Who Has Seen These Teams
No one on the Hoosier roster has ever faced Alaska-Anchorage, Marquette, Tennessee, Gonzaga or Oregon State.
Seven players faced Texas last year including; Tom Coverdale (3 points), Dane Fife (5), Jared Jeffries (13), George Leach (1), A.J. Moye (0), Jeff Newton (5), Jarrad Odle (6).

A Furious Second Half Run
Indiana trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half (15:50) but outscored Charlotte 35-19 to close out the game and post a 65-6-1 victory.
Having the Lead When it Counts
Indiana led for a total of 5:25 against Charlotte including for the game's last 3:25. The Hoosiers scored the game's first bucket and did not regain the lead until 6:09 remained in the contest.
Second Half Defense
The Hoosiers tighten the screws in the second half against Charlotte as they held the 49ers to just .281 from the floor in the final 20:00 minutes allowing just nine field goals. In the process the Hoosiers outscored the 49ers 40-30 Charlotte hit .406 of its shots in the first half to take a five-point lead at the break.
Leach Shines at Home
George Leach returned home to face Charlotte and had his best game as a Hoosier. He scored eight points, pulled down seven boards and blocked four huge shots in a career-best 18 minutes of action. The rebounds and blocks both tied career highs and his eight points fell just one point shy of his top game.

Jeffries Double Digits
Jared Jeffries has now scored in double digits in 16 of his last 17 regular season games including a 13-point, 11-rebound performance at Charlotte. The double-double has the fifth of his career and just his second on the road.
Road Warriors
The Hoosiers open the regular season they will be logging their frequent flyer miles. Indiana opened the 2001-2002 campaign on November 18 at Charlotte. The Hoosiers returned home following the game and promptly departed for Alaska on Tuesday, November 20. They will take part in the Great Alaska Shootout November 21-24 (three games) and return home on November 25. Then just two days later it is back on the road and back to North Carolina, this time to face the Tar Heels on November 28. The road swing finally comes to an end with game number six on December 1 at Southern Illinois.
The six-game road swing covering 14 days will encompass over 8,600 miles.
The last time the Hoosiers opened a season with six in a row on the road came in 1994-95. Indiana traveled to the Maui Classic, Notre Dame, faced Evansville in Indianapolis and Kentucky in Louisville before opening their home season on December 9. They posted a 2-4 mark and finished the season with a 19-12 overall mark and an 11-7 record in conference play, good for third place in the Big Ten standings.

Indiana closed out its exhibition season with a 98-76 victory over Nike Elite. All five Indiana starters scored in double digits led by Tom Coverdale's 18 points. Dane Fife chipped in 15 points (his career-high is 15 points) while Jeff Newton added 14. Jared Jeffries tallied 13 points and Kyle Hornsby hit for 12.
Indiana 105, Athletes in Action 59
Indiana opened its exhibition season with a convincing 105-59 victory over Athletes in Action. Jared Jeffries led the way for the Hoosiers as he tallied 23 points and eight rebounds. A total of five Indiana players scored in double figures including Jeff Newton (17 points, 8 rebounds), Jarrad Odle (16 points, 6 rebounds), Kyle Hornsby (14 points) and Donald Perry (10 points).
Draining the Three
Indiana hit 13 three-pointers against Nike Elite and 11 against Athletes in Action. The Hoosiers shot .585 (24-of- 41) from behind the arc in exhibition play. The 13 three-pointers would have ranked third on the IU single game record list while the 11 would sit in fifth.
