Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana University Department of Athletics has released the 2002 football schedule. The Athletics Administration and Football Program have been working together to contract a sixth home game for the upcoming season.
The NCAA now permits Division I schools to schedule a 12th regular-season football game in those years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November.
The 2002 schedule is as follows:
August 29 or 31 - Home Opener TBA
September 7 - at Utah
September 14 - at Kentucky
September 21 - CENTRAL MICHIGAN
September 28 - at Ohio State
October 5 - Open Weekend
October 12 - WISCONSIN
October 19 - IOWA (Homecoming)
October 26 - at Illinois
November 2 - at Northwestern
November 9 - MICHIGAN STATE
November 16 - PENN STATE
November 23 - at Purdue
The NCAA noted that a 12th game would generate revenue for institutions without lengthening the season, and football student-athletes would not have to return to school early from summer vacation as they currently have to do for preseason games.
Mark your calendar as the Hoosiers battle conference foe Iowa on October 19th, during the annual homecoming game. Game times will not be announced until television and the Big Ten Conference makes its decisions.
