Hoosiers Open Season at Michigan Invitational

Junior Kristin Stanford will help lead the scoring attack for the Hoosiers this year.

Tournament Information
The Indiana University Women's Water Polo team will compete this weekend, January 26-27, in the Michigan Invitational at the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The event marks the beginning of the 2002 season for the Hoosiers and the third time Indiana has competed in the Michigan Invite. The Hoosiers face Hawaii at 12:30 p.m. and UC-Santa Barbara at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday, Indiana will compete against Michigan State at 9:30 a.m. and conclude the Invite with a 2:00 p.m. match against host Michigan.

Head Coach Barry King: "This is the earliest we have ever started our season. We haven't been in the pool all that long so we'll see how the girls respond. This tournament will provide us a preview of our team and where we stand. We dial it up right away facing Hawaii, who finished seventh last year at Nationals and UC-Santa Barbara who finished sixth. With Michigan on Sunday, that's a heck of a weekend of us."

California Love...
The Hoosiers are going back to Cali...for players and tournaments. On Indiana's 2002 roster, six of the the 17 girls hail from California, the state represented by the most girls on the team. Indiana's very own Cali girls are seniors Kirsten Mayberry (Irvine/Irvine H.S.) and Kate McCollum (Rocklin/Sierra Junior College); juniors Ginger Wang (Rowland Heights/Rowland H.S.) and Kim Steele (Yorba Linda/Esperanza/ Golden West); and freshmen Jessica Goldner (Los Altos Hills/Henry M. Gunn H.S.) and Brianna Paul (Chino Hills/Ruben S. Ayala H.S.).

Also this year the Hoosiers will be returning to the west coast for some stiff competition. February 8th, Indiana will travel to La Jolla, California for the UC San Diego Triton Invite. The Hoosiers, who ended last year's CWPA rankings 20th, will compete in the event featuring No. 8 Loyola-Marymount, No. 9 San Diego State, No. 10 UC-Davis, No. 11 Long Beach State, No. 12 UC-San Diego, No. 17 California Baptist, No. 18 Hartwick, UC-Irvine and Cal State Bakersfield.
Indiana will return to California over Spring Break, March 13-16. The Hoosiers will once again meet Cal State Bakersfield on the 13th, UC-Irvine on the 14th and compete in the Loyola-Marymount Invite March 15-16.

Beaverton Buddies
This season, senior Molly Fonner will have a lot to share with fellow teammate freshman Krista Peterson. Not only are these two girls both 5-11 Utility players, but they are both from Beaverton, Oregon. Fonner graduated from Westview H.S lettering two years in water polo, while Peterson earned four varsity letters in both water polo and swimming at Sunset High School.

At The Helm...Head Coach Barry King
Indiana water polo in its four seasons, under Head Coach Barry King (85-20-2), has developed into a team that competes on the national level. In its first three seasons, IU water polo advanced to three consecutive National Championships.
King has been credited with coaching 13 All-Big Ten Conference selections, an honorable mention All-American, 11 All-Midwest Regional selections and 26 Academic All-Big Ten athletes.
King has been very successful with not only his athletes winning in the Big Ten but his teams too. Indiana won the Big Ten Championship in 2000 and placed second in 1998 and 1999.
Last season King guided the Hoosiers into a new conference, the Collegiate Water Polo Association, and had the same success as in his first three years. He coached the squad to an 18-12-1 record and a 6-2 record in the CWPA. He led IU to a third- place finish at the CWPA Southern Division Championship and a sixth-place finish at the Eastern Championship.
The Madera, California, native earned his bachelor of arts in athletic counseling (1988) and master of arts in exercise physiology (1993) from Fresno State. He also rowed two years for the University of California crew team before transferring to Fresno State.
Before coming to Indiana to work on a doctorate in exercise physiology, King coached men's and women's water polo at Madera High School (1987-88), freshman boy's basketball at Clovis High School (1986-88) and varsity swimming at San Joaquin Memorial High School.
He also coached Indiana's club water polo team for three years before it earned varsity status.

"Barry King.....C'mon Down!!!"
What started as a water polo trip to the California coast for the Hoosiers in April of 1997, turned into a very memorable experience for Indiana head coach Barry King.
After an exhausting tournament, King convinced his Hoosiers to stand in line at 5:00 a.m. and try to get tickets for the "Price is Right" television show.
To everyone's surprise, King was called as one of the first four contestants at the start of the show. Bidding on the first prize, a set of rollerblades and snowboards, King placed a prefect bid of $1,250, which not only got him on the stage but also a $100 bonus for guessing the exact dollar amount.
Dressed in his Indiana sweatshirt, King played the game Easy As 1-2-3, a game where he had to place a dish set, a chair and a refrigerator in order from least expensive to the most.
King lost the game, having priced the dish set more expensive than the chair. Host Bob Barker then turned to King and replied "We should've done this game under water."
In the popular Showcase Showdown, King spun the big wheel first and stayed on his first spin of $0.70. King found unfortunate luck once again when the second contestant got a two-spin total of $0.85.
"It was a really fun experience," said King. "I would have won big if they put me on the golf game or Plinko. Instead, they've got me pricing dishes and chairs."

Sarah Butler
Played in 16 matches scoring 10 goals and swiping 14 balls o had a game-high three goals and three steals against Salem International (4/6) o recorded four goals and four steals in three matches versus Slippery Rock.

Melissa DeBiasse
Alpha Beta Honorary o Academic All-Big Ten selection o tallied two goals and five assists in 10 matches o both goals came in conference victories over Washington and Jefferson and Slippery Rock.

Molly Fonner
Scholastic Achievement Award winner o Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award winner o Academic All-Big Ten selection o played in all 31 matches o second on the team with 36 steals o had match-high in assists six different times including three against Harvard at the Eastern Championships o totaled three assists and four steals at the Eastern Championship.

Jessica Goldner
In high school, was a member of Stanford club team which was second at Junior Nationals in 2000 o voted Most Valuable Goaltender of the Central Coast Section in 1999 and 2000 o earned NISCA fourth team All-American in 2001 and fifth team All-American in 2000 o named MVP at Cunn High in 1999 and 2000 o garnered honorable mention Junior Olympic All-America Team honors in 1999 o named to second team All-DeAnza League in 1998 o junior varsity MVP and member of El Camino League Championship team at Gunn High in 1997.

Louanne Hovater
Alpha Beta Honorary o saw limited action in 2001 o appeared in 10 matches tallying six goals and six assists and seven steals o the Hoosiers were undefeated (6-0) in matches that she had an offensive point or a steal o her three turnovers tied for the team season-low.

Kristen Jonikaitis
Alpha Beta Honorary member o saw limited action in her first year playing in 12 matches o scored eight goals and had nine assists o stole 14 balls and had only eight turnovers o Hoosiers went 9-0 in matches she had an offensive point or a steal.

Jamie Marley
Alpha Beta Honorary o played in 28 matches o scored 21 goals placing her fifth on the team in 2001 o had seven multi-goal matches and five multi-steal matches o tallied two goals in 13-6 win over Villanova (2/10) o scored two goals on two shots in 20-8 win at Gannon (3/3) o finished the year ranked seventh on all-time career goal list with 47 and eighth on career steals list with 61 o suffered broken jaw late in the season.

Kirsten Mayberry
Concluded the season with 507 career saves on 915 attempts, which are both IU records o 204 saves ranks second on the all-time IU season list o gave up zero goals and recorded eight saves in a win over Washington and Jefferson (3/3) o stopped a season-high 14 shots against Santa Clara at UC-Davis (3/10) en route to 9-2 victory o IU was 16-9-1 when she had five or more saves.

Kate McCollum
Alpha Beta Honorary o played in 30 matches o ranked in top ten on team in all offensive categories with 18 goals and eight assists and also had 28 steals o tied or led the team in goals on five occasions o in six matches she led the team in steals with her high being three against Cal-Baptist (3/10).

Sharna Nelson
Freshman from Sefton, NSW, Australia and Sefton High School o Has impressed Coach King so far this season o will help spread offense around and open up the pool for team to attack.

Krista Peterson
Earned four varsity letters in both water polo and swimming o water polo team placed second at states in 2000, fifth in 1999, second in 1998 and fourth in 1997 o team finished in sixth-place at Junior Olympics for Tualatin Hills in 1998, 99 and 2000 o selected to National Youth Water Polo Team in 2001 o high school water polo and swimming team captain in 1999 and 2000 o second-team all-state tournament selection in 2000 o swim team MVP in 2000 and 2001 o also water polo MVP in 2000 o first team all-metro in 1999 and 2000, second-team all-metro in 1009 o earned first team all-state tournament nod in 2000 o also earned first team all-state selection in 1999.
