Nolly Honored By Big Ten (10-01-02)

Bloomington, IND. - Indiana University men's soccer player Jay Nolly has been tabbed this week's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday. Nolly, the Hoosiers' goalkeeper, helped IU to a tough overtime road win over Penn State last week and upped its record to 6-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in Big Ten play.
Nolly recorded his fifth shutout of the season, including his fourth in the last five games, in the double overtime win at PSU. Though the sophomore goalie was only credited with one save, he broke up several plays and cleaned several balls out of the box to hold the Nittany Lions scoreless. The Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield HS) product anchored the Indiana defensive effort as the Hoosiers were forced to play with 10 players during the final 34 minutes of the game. Nolly's goals-against average rests at 0.63 on the season and his record matches Indiana's at 6-1-2.
The weekly honor is a career first for Nolly, who is in his first season as Indiana's starting goalkeeper. He is the second Hoosier to earn defensive honors in 2002 as senior back John Swann garnered the honor after the first week of the season on Sept. 2. Nolly's selection marks the third straight week an Indiana player has been honored by the Big Ten as senior Pat Noonan was the Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 and again on Sept. 23.
Ohio State's Jason Ryan was named Offensive Player of the Week.
The Hoosiers have pair of games on the schedule this week. On Thursday, Oct. 3, IU will face Butler University at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. The Hoosiers return home on Sunday, Oct. 6 for a Big Ten battle with the Michigan Wolverines. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the IU campus.
