Bloomington, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Indiana men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin, 5-1, Friday with 2,585 fans on hand at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington. The Hoosiers improved to 9-1-2 overall and 4-0-0 in Big Ten Conference matches, while Wisconsin fell to 7-5-0 and 1-2-0 in league play.
"This is the most energy we've had and the best we've played at home," Hoosier head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "It was a total team effort and it was nice to win like this in front of all the parents (who are in Bloomington for soccer Parent's Weekend.). We didn't wait for things to happen."
The Hoosiers struck early and often. IU's first goal came just 2:13 into the game courtesy of senior John Swann. Junior David Prall served the ball into the box and sophomore Mike Ambersley flicked it to Swann who headed it in for his second goal of the season.
Wisconsin evened the score in the 14th minute. The Hoosiers were called for a handball in the box that resulted in a Badger penalty kick. UW's Anozie Valentine knocked it past IU goalkeeper Jay Nolly to make it 1-1.
Less than five minutes later, Indiana added its second goal. This time Prall was on the receiving end of a ball from Ambersley. The goal was Prall's first of the season and the fourth of his career.
"After the penalty kick, we responded," Yeagley said. "Our bench players came in and gave the team a nudge. We came back and played with determination."
Sophomore Ned Grabavoy was responsible for Indiana's next pair of goals. In the 19th minute, Grabavoy buried the ball in the net after taking a pass on the run from Pat Noonan. Grabavoy's next goal came after a pass from senior Michael Bock. Bock hit a streaking Grabavoy again as the midfielder found the back of the net in the 36th minute.
The Hoosiers netted their final goal in style as sophomore Josh Reiher and All-American Ryan Mack assisted All-American Noonan for the header into the bottom-left portion of the goal.
The IU lead allowed the Hoosier bench to be cleared, as all active Indiana players saw the field Friday night. Chris Pomeroy, Eric Goldstein, Noah Gold and Heath Creager all played for the first time in an Indiana uniform.
The Hoosiers will take the field at home again on Sunday, Oct. 13, against Northwestern. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
