Northwestern Outduels Hoosiers, 3-2

Bloomington, Ind. - After three consecutive road losses, the Indiana volleyball squad looked forward to its return to the University Gymnasium this evening to take on the surprising Northwestern Wildcats. Riding a six-match home winning streak, including a win over 11th-ranked Ohio State in its last home outing, Indiana (11-6 overall, 1-4 Big Ten) looked as if it would arrive back home in resounding fashion, making it look easy in a 30-19 win in game one. The remainder of the night got much tougher for the Hoosiers as Northwestern won the next two games, 30-27 and 30-25. The Hoosiers bounced back to win game four, 36-34, but fell in the deciding fifth game, 15-13. Northwestern won the match, 3-2 (10-30, 30-27, 30-25, 34-36, 15-13).
"We just never got into an offensive rhythm," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "You have to give Northwestern credit as they blocked 19 balls tonight to our six. That was just a tremendous blocking performance. We came out in the first game really strong but we let them in the match and that gave them confidence. We struggled on offense and they came in and blocked balls."
Indiana was paced by sophomore outside hitter Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) and Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North), who recorded 23, 18, and 18 kills respectively. Northwestern's Iwona Lodzik notched 18 kills to lead the Wildcats.
In the fifth and deciding game, after the two teams were tied at five, Northwestern (10-6 overall, 4-1 Big Ten) took a 7-5 advantage on an attack error by junior Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central) and a poor set by sophomore setter Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) on back-to-back plays. The Hoosiers did answer immediately, tying the game at seven on an attack error by Lodzik. The two teams were tied at ten, eleven, and twelve before Northwestern scored three of the next four points scored between the two teams. Lodzik redeemed herself by recording the game-winning kill that resulted in the 15-13 Northwestern victory.
Indiana welcomed a crowd of 602 fans by taking a 14-9 lead in game one. After Indiana increased its lead to 19-11 on a kill by junior Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East), Northwestern head coach Keylor Chan called time out. While Northwestern did narrow the Indiana lead to 24-19, Indiana rattled off the next six points to win going away, 30-19.
Games two and three were generally sloppy, although Northwestern took advantage of numerous Indiana errors by recording hitting percentages of .353 and .500, respectively, in those two games.
The Hoosiers extended the match to the fifth and deciding game by winning a hard-fought fourth stanza. In that game, Indiana led 28-24 but Northwestern tied the game at 30-30, after Indiana had secured game point on a service error by Lodzik. Indiana led 32-31 before Northwestern scored the next two points to secure a one-point advantage, 33-32. A kill by Brewer tied the game at 33-33 but the Wildcats scored the next point to again put the match at its brink. Indiana, however, with the scored tied 34-34, scored the next two points, the latter of which was scored on a kill by Brewer.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday evening as the Hoosiers host the Wisconsin Badgers. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the University Gymnasium on the Bloomington campus.
