Hoosiers Drop No. 15 Badgers

Bloomington, IN - Desperately needing a win after a surprising five-match loss against Northwestern last evening, Indiana upset 15th-ranked Wisconsin, 3-2 (30-26, 26-30, 31-29, 26-30, 15-11) before 1,022 raucous spectators at the University Gymnasium this evening. Indiana outlasted the defending Big Ten champions with solid serving, crisp passing, and efficient hitting throughout the evening.
Tonight's victory was Indiana seventh victory in its last eight home matches and marked the third time in its last four outings it beat a ranked opponent (No. 30 Louisville, No. 11 Ohio State).
Indiana (12-6 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) led tonight's match two games to one, only to see the Badgers win the fourth game and send the match to the fifth and deciding game. In the final stanza, Indiana trailed only once, a 1-0 deficit to begin the game. After Indiana had taken a 10-7 lead, Wisconsin (12-5 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) closed to within 10-8 but never got closer than the two-point deficit as a kill by junior outside hitter Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central) provided the Hoosiers with the 15-11 victory. Remarkably, 13 of Indiana's 15 points in the fifth game were recorded on kills.
"We played very well early in the match and put pressure on them throughout," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "We are a good team when our setting is on and tonight our setting made it difficult for them to pass. After struggling last night, it was really important that we came out with a win against a very good team. The crowd was great tonight."
For the Hoosiers, junior Academic All-America candidate Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) led the way with a .595 hitting percentage and 25 kills. She also recorded six block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./West) and sophomore middle blocker Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) recorded 20 and 19 blocks, respectively. Sophomore Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was masterful running the IU offense and finished the evening with 69 assists and true freshman Ashley White (St. Charles, Ill./East) provided a nice spark off the bench for the Hoosiers. Junior Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East) played very well offensively in the fifth game, recording two critical kills. Wisconsin was led by Erin Byrd and Jill Odenthal, who recorded 18 and 16 kills, respectively.
Tonight's match was tight throughout as the biggest advantage for either team was a six-point lead secured by the Hoosiers in game one.
After watching Wisconsin tie the match at one game apiece, Indiana captured a 31-29 victory in game three that was certainly critical to the match's outcome. Trailing 20-18, Indiana scored three consecutive points on a kill by Brewer, a service ace by Zimmerman, and an attack error by Wisconsin's Lisa Zukowski. Indiana trailed 29-28 but a kill by Archibald, an attack error by UW's Sheila Shaw and a service ace by Archibald gave the Hoosiers the 31-29 win.
Indiana returns to action next weekend with matches at Illinois and Purdue.
