Homecoming Weekend Festivities Begin Friday

Throughout the week, many Hoosiers from various departments are gearing up for this weekend's Homecoming celebration activities. Indiana football coach Gerry DiNardo has his Hoosiers focused on Saturday's opponent Iowa, after their upset over Wisconsin last weekend. The Indiana Varsity Club and Alumni Association have been preparing for the mass of former Hoosiers that are set to return to Bloomington this weekend. And of course for the IU students, the ever-popular K201 midterm will also keep with tradition and be held Saturday morning before kickoff.
Added to the list of festivities this weekend is a student-organized bonfire Friday night, cleverly titled "Fire Up The Hoosiers." The event, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Dunn Meadow (7th & Indiana Ave.), has been organized by the Student Athletic Board (SAB) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
The SAB is an organization of Indiana students in charge of promoting and managing IU athletic events. For the first time, the SAAC and SAB have teamed up, hosting the bonfire to enhance the Homecoming festivities, and raise money for the Indiana Tornado Relief Efforts.
Nearly one month ago, devastating tornadoes struck the southern half of Indiana. While no lives were lost in the storms, many homes were destroyed, leaving many Hoosiers without shelter and belongings.
"We thought this would be a great opportunity to work with members of SAB to organize this event," said the SAAC member and former IU women's golfer, Tiffany Fisher. "SAB does so much for Indiana Athletics that we wanted to show our appreciation and team up with them for this great cause. We want this to be a part of the Homecoming tradition for years to come."
Members of both committees will be selling Pizza Express pizza and drinks at the event, while two bands, The Leonards and glisten, will play throughout the night.
Homecoming festivities begin Friday night at 5:30 p.m. with the annual parade circling the southwestern end of campus. After the parade, the Homecoming pep rally will be held at the Sample Gates at the Indiana Ave. entrance of campus, which will be followed by fireworks. The bonfire will begin shortly thereafter.
And with the October chill in the air, what better way to get fired up for Homecoming weekend, than coming out to Dunn Meadow for a tremendous cause and the beginning of a promising IU Homecoming tradition.
