Field Hockey Lose in Double Overtime (10-02-02)

Louisville, KY -The Hoosiers lost to No.9 Louisville in a double overtime battle at Trager Stadium on Wednesday night. The Hoosiers drop to 2-8 and Louisville extends their record to 7-3.The Cardinals generated six penalty corners within the first 20 minutes of the game, but the Hoosier defense was able to hold them to no shot attempts off of their corners.
The first shot of the game came from the Hoosiers at the 22:00 mark off of a penalty corner taken by Kayla Bashore. The Cardinals finally got off their first shot on goal 12:45 remaining in the half from Suzanne Irwin, but goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek made the save.
At the 10:40 mark, freshman Mallory Reabold recorded her first collegiate goal.
Freshman Nikki Orciuch received the ball at the 30-yard line, dodged one defender, and passed the ball off to Reabold. Reabold one-timed the pass and put it by goalkeeper Christy Hershey, giving IU the lead, 1-0. The Hoosiers were able to hold on to its lead going into intermission.
Once again the Hoosiers were able to prove that it doesn't matter how many shots on goal you take, but how many go in, as the Hoosiers converted on one of two of their first half shots.
Louisville came out hard in the second half, hungry to defend their No.9 ranking. Four minutes into the half Joanie Frame took a shot on goal for the Cardinals, but just missed, hitting the goal post.
Within the first seventeen minutes of the half, the Cardinals received seven penalty corners. Once again, the Hoosiers defense, led by Ginna Irwin and Morgan Albini, were able to hold the Cardinals.
With 15:00 remaining in the game, IU was back on attack. During this stint, the Hoosiers received their first corner of the half, but were unable to convert.
On the Cardinals eighth penalty corner of the half, Pip Sanders just missed the left side of the cage. The Hoosiers made a quick transition and was back on attack, but the Cardinals were not willing to let the Hoosiers stay there for long, as the Cardinals were back on in their shooting circle.
With :50 remaining in regulation, Freshman Jen Kastelic tied the score at 1-1 sending the game into overtime. The play just before Pulkrabek made a save off of a shot from Frame, but in came Kastelic receiving the rebound and putting it past Pulkrabek. This was only the second overtime period that IU has seen this season.
The Cardinals started overtime just as they ended regulation, on attack. Only 1:15 into overtime the Cardinals put the ball into the feet of the Hoosier defense, forcing a corner. Pulkrabek saved a hard shot by Kim Hughes from the top of the circle. Within three minutes Louisville forced two more corners.
At the 7:30 Desire' Miller had the opportunity to score on a fast break, but Morgan Albini stopped the play by sprinting back on defense and jabbing the ball away from Miller.
Once again the Hoosiers flew back on attack. Goalkeeper Hershey was on the ground after saving Erica Nilsson's shot. Reabold received the ball at the top of the circle and took a hard drive, but Casey Lehman made a defensive save, stopping the game winning goal for the Hoosiers.
Louisville had numerous corner opportunities, but Pulkrabek made a diving saves left and right, holding the Cardinals and sending the game into the second overtime period.
Only :18 into the second overtime period, Pip Sanders drove the ball from the top left side of the circle, putting the game to rest at 2-1.
The Cardinals ended the game with 21 shots to the Hoosiers three. Pulkrabek ended the evening with nine saves.
"I am very proud of my team," head coach Amy Robertson said. "They played with heart and never gave up. They played as a team today. It was a heart breaker. We had a top-ranked team on the ropes. It's a tough loss."
The Hoosiers return home, after playing six games on the road, October 5, to face Big Ten opponent Ohio State. The game will played at 3:00 at Mellencamp Pavilion.
