Bloomington, IN -The Indiana field hockey team recorded its first shutout of the season against Lindenwood University this afternoon at Mellencamp Pavilion, 3-0. The Hoosiers extend their record to 4-10-0, and remain at 1-3-0 in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers pulled out to an early lead in the first half when at the 8:83 mark Kayla Bashore found Erica Nilsson who slammed the ball to the back of the cage.
Indiana's second goal came at 25:50 with Nilsson's second goal of the game. Bashore took the initial shot that rebounded off the post to Nilsson, who put it past goalkeeper Leah Werry, tallying her fifth on the season. This milestone goal puts Nilsson at the No. 1 spot for most goals scored in a season, passing teammate Kim Nash who held the record in 2001 with four goals.
Indiana out-shot Lindenwood 18-1 in the first half. Lindenwood's only shot was taken by July Widmer with 33 seconds left in the stanza.
The Hoosiers concluded the first half leading the Lions 2-0.
With 14:48 remaining in the game, senior Lindsay Schafer rebounded her own shot off of Werry's pads, scoring the third goal of the game, the first of her collegiate career.
"It was a really exciting moment," Schafer said. "I took it right off of the goalie's pads and found the corner of the cage. It was one of the most exciting moments for me thus far. It makes it all worth while when you have moment like that."
The Hoosiers dominated on attack, out-shooting the Lions 31-2, a new record in the Indiana field hockey history, and 15-2 on penalty corners.
"It is very uncommon for a Division I team to play a Division III team, but Lindenwood is one of best Division III teams in the country," head coach Amy Robertson said. "It was important for us to dictate our own speed and tempo today. We maintained our discipline and kept fighting. I felt that we had a lull at one point in the game but we came back and continued to attack. It was really good for us to get our fourth win of the season."
The Hoosiers are back in action Friday, Oct. 25, to face Big Ten opponent Iowa at Mellencamp Pavilion. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
