Bloomington, IN - The Indiana men's basketball team got back to work on Monday afternoon after more than 6,000 fans turned out for Saturday's scrimmage that was free and open to the public. After practice, senior Kyle Hornsby and freshman Daryl Pegram sat down with iuhoosiers.com to discuss the first week of practice.KYLE HORNSBY
Compare the team's progress after one week of practice this season to this time a year ago
"We're further along than last year at this time, that's for sure. There's really only four guys (freshmen Daryl Pegram, Marshall Strickland, Roderick Wilmont and Bracey Wright) who have not seen the offense. The rest of us are familiar with the offense and know what is supposed to happen. We just need to work on a lot of the little things right now."
Talk about the importance of being a senior leader
"I try to stay calm and not let things show. You have to learn to play through things. All three of us (seniors Hornsby, Tom Coverdale and Jeff Newton) do that well. It sets a good example."
DARYL PEGRAM
What has been the biggest transition to college basketball?
"Physically, we're in shape. The hardest part is the mental aspect. You have to learn a lot of plays and different rotations. You have to go back and watch a lot of film."
How have some of the older frontcourt players helped you?
"I've learned a lot from `Newt' (Jeff Newton) and George (Leach). I try and watch them in practice. They have been here and know what the coaches want."
Are you surprised by how loyal and feverish IU fans are?
"The (Oct. 19) scrimmage was great. The turnout we had was unbelievable. Bracey, Marshall, Rod (Roderick Wilmont) and I each got a taste of how big Indiana basketball was during the summer (the annual state-wide barnstorming tour), and it was also evident Saturday and at Midnight Madness. It just makes you look forward to the regular season."
