Hoosiers and Dennison Hold Strong Leads Entering Final Round

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Indiana University women's golf team is in position to end its fall season the way it began - sweeping both the team and individual titles at the Mission Inn Classic.
The Hoosiers currently stand 12 strokes ahead of Big Ten rival Wisconsin, after a first round 304. Indiana junior Karen Dennison, the No. 4-ranked golfer in the nation, carded the tournament's lone sub-par round Monday with a 2-under-par 70.
Wisconsin's 316 is followed by third-place Jacksonville State (320) and Campbell's 322. Other Big Ten teams in the field include Illinois tied for sixth at 325 and Iowa tied for ninth with 331.
Dennison is five strokes ahead of Wisconsin's Malinda Johnson, who recorded a 3-over-par 75. Dennison is no stranger to Johnson giving chase, as the Badger carded a course-record final-round of 66 to place second behind Dennison at the Hoosiers' last event, the Shootout at the Legends.
"The team played well today, but we struggled in the finish," said Indiana head coach Sam Carmichael. "We had a few players around par with five holes to go and just stumbled a bit on the way in. We need to be more protective in our play, because we played too good for too many holes, to finish the way we did."
Sunny skies and 85-degree temperatures comforted the Hoosiers, who are embarking on their second team title this fall. The Hoosiers have also recorded a second and third-place finish so far this season.
Dennison is looking for her third title of the fall in four events. The Madison, Ind., native won the season-opening Wolverine Invitational and the Shootout at the Legends two weeks ago. The lone time Dennison did not claim victory this fall, was at the Lady Northern where she was the runner-up.
"Karen played extremely well today and had a solid round," said Carmichael. "She continues to make very few mistakes and put herself in position to win."
Rounding at the lineup for Indiana is junior Danah Ford with 76, which places her tied for fourth entering the final round. Senior Cara Stuckey is tied for 11th with 78, while Ambry Bishop is tied for 21st with an 80. Freshman Molly Redfearn is tied for 25th with an 81.
Both Carmichael and Dennison will be looking for wins Tuesday as the Hoosiers wrap up the 36-hole Mission Inn Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
