Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana guard Tom Coverdale is among the 30 players on The Watch List for the second annual Senior CLASS Award. The Senior CLASS Award concept was instituted by CBS sportscaster Dick Enberg during the telecast of the 2001 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Game. Enberg was inspired by the decision of former Duke All-American Shane Battier, who, following an outstanding junior season, chose to return for his senior year rather than leave school early for the riches of the NBA. The award honors the top male and female senior collegiate basketball players who have remained committed to their university and team despite the overwhelming pressure to join the ranks of the professionals.Coverdale has also been named to the 2002-03 John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-American Team. The Wooden Award is college basketball's most prestigious honor, and Coverdale is listed among the top 50 preseason candidates.
A national poll was conducted of The John R. Wooden Award Preseason Committee to determine the Top 50 Preseason Candidates. The candidates have been selected based on last year's individual performance and team records. Coverdale's former Hoosier teammate, Jared Jeffries, finished eighth in the 2001-02 Wooden Award balloting.
The 6-2 Noblesville, Ind., native was the heart and soul of Indiana's 2002 national runner-up and Big Ten Co-championship team. The All-Big Ten second team selection was second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game and was also among the Big Ten leaders in assists (third, 4.81 per game) and steals (seventh, 1.54). In addition to earning NCAA South Regional MVP honors, Coverdale dished out 178 assists, the second-best single-season effort in IU history. His 70 three-pointers are fifth in the Hoosier single-season record book, and he needs 188 points to become the 37th member of Indiana's 1,000 career point club.
