Crimson Sweeps Cream in Weekend Baseball Action

Fall 2002 Final Statistics
Bloomington, Ind. – Crimson defeated Cream in all five intrasquad games to conclude the Indiana fall baseball season over the weekend. The Crimson vs. Cream series is an annual event that occurs during Homecoming and IU Baseball Alumni weekend.
The Crimson team used a stellar defensive effort and solid hitting to sweep the set (12-8, 8-4, 4-1, 8-4 and 5-1). On the mound, Crimson was led by junior Adam Pegg, freshman Josh Lewis and senior Jacob Cary. Pegg totaled 13.2 innings of work and struck out nine. Lewis pitched 9.1 innings and fanned 13 batters and Cary was solid in nine innings of work.
Senior Nick Evans played well both defensively and offensively for the Crimson club. He collected five hits, drew five walks and scored seven runs. Redshirt freshman Ryan Parker (10-for16, 8 runs, 6 RBI), senior Mark Calkins (5-for-11, 4, RBI, 3 doubles) and sophomore Corby Heckman (6-for-20, 5 RBI, HR) were forces at the plate as well.
For the Cream team, junior pitcher Chris Behrens was a workhorse. Behrens threw 10 innings and logged 13 strikeouts. Senior All-AmericanVasili Spanos (5-for-12, 3, RBI, 3 runs) and junior Kevin Mahar (7-for-15, 3 RBI, 3 runs) paced the offensive attack.
Members of the winning Crimson team included Pegg, Evans, Lewis, Cary, Parker, Calkins, Heckman, seniors Kenny Marrs and Brad DeStefano, juniors Cody Wargo, Nate Lasley and Josh Matlick, sophomores Brian Bucciarelli, Kevin Inglis and Kurt Weigle and freshmen Dan Pezley, Steven Head, Derek Hibbs, Bryan Lowry.
Though they are finished with team fall practice, the Hoosiers will hit the weight room and concentrate and on strength and conditioning. The IU coaching staff will also spend two hours a week with players in individual workout sessions.
