Bloomington, IN - With the start of the 2002-03 college basketball campaign right around the corner, the preseason publications can be found on every newsstand. Here is a sampling of where the defending Big Ten co-champion and national runner-up Indiana Hoosiers are projected.The Sporting News ranks the Hoosiers second in the league and 23rd in the nation. They tab IU freshman guard Bracey Wright as the Big Ten's Newcomer of the Year and veteran senior guard Tom Coverdale as the league's top playmaker. Coverdale is named to the preseason all-conference first-team, while forward Jeff Newton is a second-team selection.
Basketball News also slates the Hoosiers for second in the Big Ten and 24th overall. BN offers exclusive national rankings of the top players by position, and they have Coverdale among the top 20 playmakers. Wright is also noted as a Newcomer to Watch among the nation's top shooting guards.
Athlon Sports also took notice of Coverdale's solid junior season, naming the 6-2 guard among the nation's top 10 playmakers. Athlon's also picks IU second in the Big Ten, and Newton is their pick for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
Lindy's puts the Hoosiers at No. 22 in the nation and second in the Big Ten. Lindy's features a unique profile on third-year IU head coach Mike Davis and also proclaims Newton and Coverdale among the nation's top 15 at their respective positions.
Street & Smith's projects Indiana fourth in the Big Ten and 21st nationally. Newton and Coverdale are also recognized as the league's best shot blocker and leader, respectively.
