Hoosiers Collect Fourth-Consecutive Victory

Bloomington, IN - Indiana extended its winning streak to four matches
after disposing of Big Ten foe Iowa at University Gymnasium this
evening, 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 30-24, 30-24). In doing so, the Hoosiers extended
their record to 15-6 overall, including a 5-4 mark in the Big Ten. Iowa
dropped to 8-11, 2-7 in conference play.
It didn't take long for senior Hillary Toivonen (Muncie, Ind./Central)
to find her way into the record books. Early in the third game,
Toivonen recorded her seventh dig of the match, which moved her past current
IU assist Cyryce Carter on Indiana's career dig list. With 16 digs on
the evening, Toivonen has tallied 1,138 career kills.
"It was one of my goals tonight," Toivonen said. "It feels really
great."
Sophomore Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and junior
Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) brought the particsan
home crowd to its feet throughout much of the match, slamming home 19
and 17 kills, respectively. Pollom's 19 kills matched her career high,
which she set last Saturday evening (Oct. 19). Sophomore Victoria
Zimmerman continued her stellar performance as she notched 63 assits and 13
digs.
"We knew Iowa was going to send a lot of first and second contacts
over the net, and we knew that they were going to be tough on defense,"
Pollom said. "We just concentrated on getting small balls and terminating
and transitioning when we could. They did play outstanding defense. A
lot of balls that would have been downed on other teams were coming
right back at us. We just stayed focused throughout the end."
Indiana took an early 5-1 lead in game one, but Iowa came back to tie
the game at 8-8. IU fought to regain the lead on Nikki Hill's (Muncie,
Ind./Muncie Central) kill, which made the score 9-8. From there, IU
went on a 4-0 run. The Hawkeyes regrouped during a timeout and got itself
back into the game, closing the gap to 20-18.
After Iowa cut IU's lead to one point, 24-25, Indiana called a
timeout of its own. Returning from the timeout, Brewer and Hill both
recorded kills, which helped IU take a three-point advantage. Once again,
the Hawkeyes continued to fight the Hoosier throughout game one and
ultimately tied the game, 27-27. After Iowa took the lead for the first
time, 28-27, Indiana called its second timeout of the game. After the stoppage in
play, the Hawkeyes took control, scoring two of the final three points
on their way to a 30-28 win. Melissa Brewer led the Hoosier attack
with six kills in game one. Iowa out-hit Indiana .227 to .161 in the
match-opening game..
Game two started off just as game one ended, with both teams engaged
in a highly competitive tilt until the Hoosiers went on a 6-1 run to
take a 13-6 lead. The Hoosiers maintained their lead, but Iowa refused to
go away. Iowa rallied and closed the IU lead to three points, 20-17.
After the run by the Hawkeyes, IU went on a 5-0 run of its own, taking a
25-19 advantage. The Hoosiers never looked back, winning the second
game, 30-24, and evening the match at one game apiece.
Game three proved to be a back-and-fourth battle with Indiana and Iowa
trading points throughout much of the stanza. Neither team took more
than a two-point lead until the Hoosiers broke loose, securing a
three-point advantage, 26-23, forcing Iowa to take a timeout. IU continued its
rally, scoring the last four points of the game, the final recorded on
a service ace by sophomore Beth Heiman's (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont).
Iowa pulled out to a 4-1 lead over Indiana in game four. The Hoosiers
battled back tying the game at five a piece. The game turned into
another back-and-fourth contest, with the biggest lead up to that point
coming from another kill by Pollom that gave the Hoosiers a 13-9 lead. With
Indiana leading only 17-16, IU continued to put the pressure on the
Hawkeyes and went on to snag a four-point lead, 21-17. IU called time out
and effectively stemmed the tied, pulling to within 21-18. However, the
Hawkeyes never got any closer than a three-point deficit. Pollom ended
the match with her career-high tying 19th kill.
"I am glad that we stayed focused tonight," head coach Katie
Weismiller said. "It was a good game and a good win for us."
The Hoosiers are back in action tomorrow night to face the No. 8
Minnesota Golden Gophers at University Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7:00
p.m.
