Iowa Moves Past IU, 3-1 (10-25-02)

Bloomington, IN - The Indiana field hockey team dropped 3-1 against Big Ten opponent Iowa this afternoon. The Hoosiers fall to 4-11 on the season, and 1-4 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeye's extend their record to 9-5, and 2-2 in the conference.
"We came out with a lot of heart, we weren't playing the way we are normally capable of playing," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We didn't distribute well."
The Hawkeye's wasted no time and immediately jumped on attack. Just over 14 minutes into the first half Patty Gillern had an opportunity to put the Hawkeye's on the board, but Kayla Bashore stopped the hard drive taken from a penalty corner.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the first half with 9:25 left on the clock with a goal from forward Sarah Dawson. With goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek on the ground, Pattie Gillern passed the ball to Dawson, recording her fourth goal of the season.
Iowa entered went into intermission up by one, out-shooting the Hoosiers 6-2 and 4-0 on corners.
"I think that Iowa took advantage of the opportunities when we were disorganized," midfielder Kayla Bashore said. "There were five or ten minute intervals where our defense was a little disorganized and that is when they exploded on us. Thy did a really good job taking advantage of that."
The Hoosiers generated their first penalty corner with just under twenty minutes left in the game. Iowa goalkeeper Barbara Weinberg stopped Bashore's drive from the top of the circle.
At the 14:16 mark Gillern recorded her second assist of the game as she found teammate Adria LaSovage giving Iowa a 2-0 advantage. LaSovage placed the ball in the right corner of the cage passed a diving Pulkrabek.
Within three minutes the Hawkeye's scored their third goal as Lindsay Miller rebounded the ball off Pulkrabek's pads.
Jaime O'Pray found the back of the net, scoring her first goal of the season and the Hoosiers first goal of the game. O'Pray deflected a pass from Kimberly Nash, tipping the ball over Weinberg.
"Kim took the initial shot," O'Pray said. "It was a good shot, I just made a connection with it and scored."
IU never gave up and fought to the end, but time expired putting the game to rest at 3-1.
Molly Pulkrabek ended the game with nine saves off 17 Hawkeye shot attempts. IU was only able to get six shots off during the contest.
"It wasn't until the last ten minutes of the game, after Iowa scored their third goal, that we finally went back on the field and played the way we were capable of playing," coach Robertson said. "We ended up scoring after that. It was no secret that the goal was the result of finally moving the ball around. This is when we started playing together as a team."
The Indiana field hockey team is back in action tomorrow at Mellencamp Pavilion to face the Billikens of St. Louis. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
