No. 8 Minnesota Too Much for Hoosiers

Bloomington, IN - In the midst of a four-match winning streak, it looked as if Indiana might be facing the eighth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at exactly the right time as the two teams squared off at the University Gymnasium this evening. While Indiana did win one game, and made Minnesota work throughout the deciding fourth stanza, Minnesota was too much for the host Hoosiers in securing a 3-1 (19-30, 30-24, 18-30, 27-30) decision. With tonight's loss, Indiana drops to 15-7 overall and 5-5 in Big Ten action, while Minnesota extended its record to 22-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
"A loss is tough," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "But from a coaching standpoint, I know this team will come back and rebound. We will work hard and get back at it."
Sophomore Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) led the Hoosier attack, recording 15 kills on the evening. Christina Archibald (Belleville, Ill./Bellville West) and Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) followed close behind with 14 kills, a piece. Victoria Zimmerman notched 52 assists and a career-high 18 digs.
In game one, Minnesota gained an early 3-0 advantage but back-to-back kills by Archibald and Brewer drew the Hoosiers to within one point, trailing only 7-6. Minnesota, however, scored the next two points and continued to make large runs throughout the first game.
Trailing 13-7, Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller called time out. Following the stoppage in play, Indiana scored the next three points of game one to close the Minnesota lead to 13-10. Minnesota, however, was not deterred as the Golden Gophers scored seven of the next 11 points between the two teams to take a 20-14 lead. Back-to-back kills by Pollom and junior Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central) again narrowed the Minnesota lead to 20-16. However, Minnesota made another substantial run, taking a 26-19 lead before Indiana called its second timeout of the game.
Minnesota closed out game one with a block assist by Bethany Brafford and Erin Martin, making the final 19-30. Pollom and Archibald led on attack with five kills a piece.
"I think we came out flat in game one," Brewer said. "We seemed to have a lot of energy before we cam out to warm up. The momentum changed a lot."
In game two, Indiana took an early 7-5 lead on a service ace by Brewer and never trailed again for the remainder of the game. Indiana extended its lead to four points, 10-6, on a block assist by Pollom and Zimmerman. Indiana went on to take a 23-18 lead on a kill by Brewer and a service ace by Archibald gave IU its biggest lead of the evening, 25-19. An Archibald kill ended game two and provided the Hoosiers with a 30-24 victory. Archibald and Hill led IU with five kills each in game two.
Minnesota rebounded nicely after losing game two and jumped to an early 11-3 advantage. Following an Indiana timeout, the Golden Gophers continued to attack offensively and increased their lead to 15-5. From that point on Minnesota took control, putting the game to rest on a service ace by Lindsey Vander Wall, that gave the Gophers a 30-18 victory in game two and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Minnesota, on a service ace by Cassie Busse, evened the score at 8-8. After three consecutive kills by Archibald gave the Hoosiers a 16-12 lead, Minnesota called time out. Indiana scored the next point of the match on yet another kill by Archibald. Leading 18-13, Archibald continued to control the flow of the game and gave the Hoosiers a 19-13 lead on a service ace. A block assist by Brewer and junior Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East) pushed IU's lead to 20-13. Indiana, however, was unable to hold its advantage and Minnesota took its first lead of the game, 28-27, and never looked back, scoring the final two points of the match on back-to-back kills by Trisha Bratford and Busse.
"A loss like this hurts deep down, but we are going to take this with us into practice this week," Archibald said. "Any team you lose to you want to come back from it, and so we will use this."
Indiana returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1, when it travels to Madison, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Badgers. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
