Spartans Size Foils Hoosiers, 3-0

East Lansing, Mich. - With the thunderous noise levels at Jenison Field House in tonight's volleyball match between Indiana and 22nd-ranked Michigan State, it's hard to fathom how loud it must have been when filled to capacity during college basketball games of years past. Built in 1940, Jenison was the home of Spartan basketball until 1989 and is where Magic Johnson led the Spartans to the 1979 NCAA title. Jenison Field House has also treated the volleyball program well as the Spartans have recorded a 103-35 record at the facility, including a 6-0 mark in 2002, after tonight's 31-29, 30-25, 30-18 victory over the Hoosiers.
Indiana (11-5 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) was successful taking the crowd out of the match throughout most of game one as the Hoosiers played some of their finest volleyball of the season early in the match. Yet, despite leads of 24-19 in game one and an early 12-8 advantage in the second game, Indiana failed to put way the host Spartans (11-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) in either of the first two stanzas. Michigan State had the Hoosiers reeling and kept the pressure on throughout game three, taking a 14-5 lead and cruising to an easy victory in the deciding game. Sophomore captain Katie Pollom (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) led the Hoosiers with 13 kills and a .417 hitting percentage.
Early in the match, Indiana silenced the partisan Spartan crowd, controlling the tempo of game and taking a 24-19 lead on a kill by Pollom. Game one ended with Indiana outhitting the Spartans, .349-.341. Indiana also recorded 21 kills to Michigan State's 20 and virtually every other statistical category was evenly matched.
Similar to last evening's match at Michigan, Indiana wasted little time getting started in game one, taking a 4-1 lead on a block solo by Archibald. Unlike the match vs. the Wolverines, Indiana was the first team to 10 points, taking a 10-6 advantage on a kill by Monique Pritz (Columbus, Ind./East). Indiana took a 14-10 lead on a block assist by Brewer and Archibald. With as many as six chances to push its lead to five points, Indiana failed to take advantage until Nikki Hill (Muncie, Ind./Central) put away a ball on an attack that gave the Hoosiers a 22-17 lead and. Spartan head coach Chuck Erbe responded by calling timeout as Indiana was playing its finest volleyball of the season.
Following the Michigan State stoppage in play, the Spartans cut into the Indiana lead and pulled to within two points, 24-22, on a block by Nikki Colson and cut the IU lead to 24-23 before Weismiller called a timeout of her own. The Hoosiers scored the next two points of the game, the second coming on a block assist by sophomore setter Victoria Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and Pollom, and Michigan State countered with yet another timeout. Indiana took 26-23 and 27-24 leads but couldn't extend its lead to four points as Michigan State scored on two service errors by the Hoosiers. Seizing the momentum, Michigan State tied the game on a kill by senior outside hitter Kyla Smith, forcing Weismiller to call her second timeout. The Spartans took their first lead of the night, 28-27, but Indiana tied the game on a kill by Archibald. Michigan State again took the lead but a kill by Brewer tied the game, 29-29. Michigan State scored the next two points to win game one, 31-29.
With its resolve being tested, Indiana had to find a way to match Michigan State's intensity level following the Spartans comeback in game one. The Hoosiers did recapture its focus and took an 8-3 lead in game two on a service ace by Zimmerman. Indiana was again the first team to ten points, taking a 10-7 lead on a kill by Pritz. After Indiana had taken a 12-8 lead, Michigan State tied the game at 14-14. The Spartans were the first team to 20 points, as a kill by sophomore Kim Schram gave MSU a 20-18 lead. After Indiana tied the game at 20-20 on a tip by Zimmerman, Michigan State scored the next three points and Weismiller called timeout. Michigan State extended its lead to 25-21 but Indiana scored two consecutive points to close to within 25-23. Following a Michigan State timeout, Indiana never got any closer than a 28-25 deficit.
After highly competitive efforts in games one and two, Indiana could not sustain its level of play and fell behind 14-6 in game three. The Hoosiers never recaptured any momentum and Michigan State continued to play at a high level throughout the deciding game.
Indiana returns to action on Friday, October 11, when the Hoosiers host Northwestern. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST.
