Dennison Breaks School Record En Route to Second Individual Championship

FRANKLIN, Ind. - After a morning delay, the Indiana University women's golf team stood on the first tee trailing Kent State by three strokes at the Shootout at the Legends. They were determined, focused, and yes, probably nervous.
Perhaps it was the nerves that affected the Hoosiers' front-nine performance Tuesday, as the team combined for a 23-over-par total, which put them out of reach of eventual winner No. 20 Kent State (888).
The win marks a 3-for-3 start for the Screaming Eagles.
"The first nine holes today were pretty disappointing but they hung in there until the end," said Indiana coach Sam Carmichael.
No. 17 Indiana rallied on the back-nine to finish a team-best third in the event with an 897 (298-294-305). The finish marks the lowest 54-hole team score in the event, passing the 2001 Hoosier performance of 898.
Clearly the moment of the day was when junior Karen Dennison two-putted for par on the 18th green, which gave her a 74 on the day, her second individual championship, and a taste of another school record. The Madison, Ind., native carded a 54-hole total of 212 to break Erika Wicoff's record of 213 shot at the 1995 NCAA Championships.
"Knowing that Erika plays on (LPGA) Tour and I'm just a junior, breaking that record is really a honor," Dennison said. "My teammates and Coach (Carmichael) really helped me not only today, but throughout this season. I am really appreciative of that."
And even Wisconsin's Melinda Johnson's final-round course record of 66 wasn't enough to take the individual title away from Dennison, marking her second win of the season and her career.
"Karen played well today, but ran into a few putting problems," said Carmichael. "So far this season, she's really showing that she's one of the top players in our district and the country."
The junior won the season-opening Wolverine Invitational by eight strokes, finished second last weekend at the Lady Northern, and finished an impressive four strokes ahead of Johnson at 4-under-par.
"I couldn't hit the ball much better than I did today," said Dennison. "My swing felt really good, but my putting just struggled."
Four of the six Hoosiers playing Tuesday-Mary Lidester, Danah Ford, Cara Stuckey and Molly Redfearn-carded final rounds of 5-over-par 77. Junior Ambry Bishop recorded a 79 to finish tied for 26th with a 230. Lidester placed 32nd with 231, followed by Ford and Stuckey tied at 36th with 233. Redfearn placed tied for 42nd with 234.
Missouri finished two strokes ahead of Indiana at 895, with Wisconsin (902) and Illinois (903) rounding out the top five.
Indiana will complete its fall season October 21-22, at the Hatter Fall Classic in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
