IU Kicks off 02-03 Season this Friday

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's basketball teams each enjoyed a storybook year last winter - Not only did the men win a share of the 20th Big Ten championship en route to the eighth NCAA Final Four appearance in school history, but the women won the 2002 Big Ten Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers have worked hard this offseason and are looking to carry that momentum into the 2002-03 campaign, which tips off this Friday night and Saturday morning with the annual Midnight Madness festivities at Assembly Hall. Doors open to the public at 11 p.m., and the cost of admission is one canned food item. All admission proceeds benefit the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.When IU fans enter the door, they will have the opportunity to purchase a Student Athletic Advisory Committee raffle ticket. Should their ticket be drawn between 11:15 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., 10 lucky fans and their guest will get to experience Midnight Madness from court level. All raffle proceeds benefit Hoosier Hills Food Bank to offset their operational costs.
Indiana's Student Athletic Board will select four male fans and four female fans to participate in a three-point shooting contest. Each contestant will have 45 seconds to make as many three-pointers, from five designated spots on the floor, as possible. Each three-pointer made counts as one point. The top two male and female shooters will advance to the semifinals, where the scores revert back to zero after each round. At the conclusion of the semifinals, the top female and male shooters will be the champions, and those two will have 30 seconds to compete head-to-head for the overall title. The male and female champions will each receive two tickets to a future men's basketball game, and the other six contestants will each receive a $20 gift certificate from the IU Varsity Shop, courtesy of Student Athletic Board.
At 12:01 a.m., the Hoosier men's and women's teams will be introduced to the crowd as they take the floor. The Spot Shot Contest gets underway at 12:11 a.m. Seven two-person teams, consisting of one men's player and one women's player, will have 45 seconds to score as many points as possible. There will be one-point, two-point, and three-point shots designated on the floor, as two teams will compete at the same time on opposite ends of the court. The two teams with the highest point total advance, and the two advancing teams compete one final time to determine the overall champion.
The three-point shooting contest commences at 12:26 a.m. Seven men's and seven women's competitors will each have 45 seconds to make as many treys as possible from five designated points around the three-point arc. The top two men and top two women will go head-to-head to determine the male and female champion, and the male and female champions will go head-to-head to determine the overall winner.
The Slam Dunk Contest is the final contest of the evening and gets underway at 12:45 a.m. Five women's players will judge the dunks of four men's players. Each dunk will have a maximum score of 50 points (five judges awarding up to 10 points each. Each player has two dunks in the first round, and the best score of the two will count. The two highest scoring contestants advance to the finals. In the finals, each competitior has two dunks, and the highest combined score wins the contest.
The men's team concludes fesitivities with a 10-minute scrimmage at 1:05 a.m.
