Bloomington, IN - The Indiana field hockey team concluded its season at 6-13 overall, 1-5 in the Big Ten, the best record since the inception of the program in 2000.
Junior co-captain, Erica Nilsson led the Hoosiers in points, recording five goals and one assist. This set a new record for the Indiana program for most points in a season along with most goals in a season. Nilsson also entered the record books tying the in single-game record for goals, with two against Lindenwood on Oct. 20 and two against Miami University of Ohio on Aug. 31.
Kayla Bashore led the Hoosiers in the midfield, as she was named first team All-Big Ten after notching three goals and three assists, good enough to finish second on the team with nine points. Bashore not only posed a threat on the offensive end, but was a key contributor in the Hoosier defense.
In cage for the Hoosiers was Molly Pulkrabek. Pulkrabek recorded 147 saves, a save percentage of .795, a goals against average of 2.12 and posted three shutouts, the best in Indiana field hockey history to date. Pulkrabek also entered the record books for most saves in a game with 17, against Ball State on Sept. 21. Pulkrabek appeared among the national leaders for saves and save percentage every week of the season. In the final November 12, 2002 poll, Pulkrabek ranked ninth in saves and 16th in save percentage. Despite a 3-0 loss to Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, Pulkrabek received all-tournament honors for her 10 saves against the Spartan attack.
The Hoosiers made great strides this season, improving in almost every category possible. They surpassed last year's record for most goals in a season, scoring 22, posted a 1.16 goals per game average, improved in goals against per game with 2.13, took a season high 156 shots on goal and in one single game got off 31 shots (against Lindenwood on Oct. 20).
