Dickey Named Assistasnt Coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University women's water polo head coach Barry King announced Friday the hiring of the Hoosiers' newest assistant coach, Kristie Dickey.
"We are extremely happy and really excited to have Kristie a part of our staff," said King. "She brings a wealth of playing experience on the national level and will help us immensely"
Known nationwide as a former player, Dickey was a four-time United States Water Polo All-American at the University of California-Davis from 1991-95. Dickey led the Aggies to a USWP National Collegiate title in 1993, while being named most valuable player for her efforts. Dickey also was a part of the Aggies squad that placed second in 1992 and recorded back-to-back third-place finishes in 1994 and 1995.
"I'm excited to be a part of the IU family," Dickey said. "I look forward to building lasting relationships with all members of the team, as we work towards building a championship caliber program."
Touted as one of the nation's best utility players in 1993, Dickey's primary responsibilities will be with the Hoosier offense. Last year, Indiana set a school record for scoring as IU netted 353 goals, led by three Hoosiers-Kristin Stanford (66), Sharna Nelson (53) and Krista Peterson (50)-scoring 50 goals or more.
"Kristie coaches with a style to which the players can easily relate," King said. "She will be key in improving our offensive attack."
A participant in three Olympic festivals, Dickey competed as a member of the U.S. National squad for four years before retiring in 1995. In her last season, Dickey was named the Western Regional MVP.
Upon hanging up the suit, Dickey, 30, returned to the classroom to work on her teaching credential. She returned to water polo in 1997 as the head coach of Rio Americano High School in Sacarmento, Calif.
Staying involved in the coaching ranks, Dickey served a two-year stint at Middletown Midde School in Middletown, Calif., as the volleyball and women's basketball head coach from 1999-2001.
Dickey, who will begin her duties at Indiana in January, currently teaches history at Will C. Wood Junior High in Sacramento. She also serves as head coach of the junior varsity water polo squad at Davis High School.
Born January 13, 1972, Dickey currently resides in Sacramento.
