Bloomington, Ind. - Junior middle blocker Melissa Brewer (Bloomington, Ind./North) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District V Volleyball squad (includes University Division players from Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin). She was one of six players to be named first-team all-region. Brewer currently maintains a 3.91 grade point average in biology. With her selection to the all-region team, Brewer is now eligible to be named to the Verizon Academic All-America team, which will be announced in December. This year's recognition marks the second consecutive year that Brewer has received Academic All-Region accolades."Melissa Brewer is an outstanding student and athlete," said head coach Katie Weismiller. "She takes great pride in the way that she carries herself, both on and off the court. Her attitude is infectious. She provides such a great example for our younger players that we had eight players meet the academic requirements to be named to this team (at least a sophomore in eligibility and a 3.20 GPA). The academic success of this current group of Indiana Volleyball players is truly impressive."
On the court, Brewer is hitting a team-best .323 and averages 3.81 kills per game. She has been nothing short of spectacular during Big Ten play. In addition to recording at least a .400 hitting percentage in each of Indiana's last five Big Ten matches, which includes three IU victories, Brewer is attacking at a .362 clip in 16 Big Ten matches. She has recorded a hitting percentage of over .400 on six occasions, including a .595 hitting percentage and 25 kills in a home victory over Wisconsin, a 20-kill and .529 hitting percentage in a win at Northwestern, and a 22-kill, .500 hitting percentage performance in a win at Purdue.
With four games remaining, Indiana (18-8 overall, 8-8 Big Ten) is still in contention for an NCAA tournament berth. The Hoosiers will face Minnesota in Minneapolis on Friday evening and compete against the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Saturday. Indiana returns home on Friday, November 29, for a match vs. intrastate rival Purdue.
