Beyond the national ESPN audience, beyond the intense rivalry that is the Titan Series lies yet another bold truth - IU seniors will suit up Saturday for their final game for the Cream and Crimson.
"I appreciate everything (the seniors) have done," said head coach Gerry DiNardo. "They need to - and I believe they do - take this seriously and really take it to heart."
The Indiana vs. Purdue matchup to be held Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Ind. has a storied history. After a 2001 Hoosier victory, the Boilermakers are inevitably looking for redemption. But that is not all the Purdue team is in search of heading into Saturday's game - with a loss to IU in Ross-Ade Stadium, the Boilermakers will lose all hopes of a bowl bid, falling just short of a six-win, bowl-game-worthy season.
First year Indiana head coach Gerry DiNardo's Hoosier team looks to cap a 2002 injury-plagued season with an emotional and hard-fought victory over the Boilermakers. The Hoosiers carry a 3-8 overall record into the contest while the Boilermakers are 5-6 heading into Saturday's rival game.
The Titan Series is an Indiana vs. Purdue point contest. Every sport in which IU and Purdue compete in head-to-head competition is worth points. The university that earns the most points by the end of the 2002-03 season will be the Titan Series victor, holding bragging rights for the ensuing year. IU currently leads by 1.5 points. With a win on Saturday, the Hoosiers could extend their lead to 2.5 points.
